Euro Playstation Owners Can View Trophies on iPhone PS App
The Official Playstation App is now available to European iPhone owners, after a while in the pipe. We’re still waiting in the U.S., but it doesn’t seem like we’re missing out on too much just yet.
News over at the Playstation Blog in Europe explains the features that come along with the app, which is available for free on iDevices as well as Google’s Android OS. Right now, the app is only available in the U.K., Spain, Italy, The Netherlands and France.
The app isn’t too stunning — it lets you view trophies from the Playstation Network on your phone, and see your friends’ games and online status. You can search and read up about Playstation games and products, read posts from the Playstation Blog, and post your Playstation-related favorite products to Twitter and Facebook and through email.
More features are planned, including the ability to post to the Playstation forums remotely, and the app is on its way to other markets. More remarkable than what it does, however, is what the Playstation app doesn’t do: it doesn’t let you communicate with friends, it doesn’t let you buy things on the Playstation Network, it doesn’t let you purchase games or products directly. Some or all of those features might be a little much, but the point is, the Playstation app lacks teeth at this stage.
Not that we were expecting much, because while Sony might be interested in tapping into the iPhone and Android gaming markets, it seems the plan is to take their market share by force rather than diplomacy. That’s where that Xperia Play, the rumored Playstation Phone, comes in. We just got to see video of the phone playing PSX games using the phone’s built in Playstation Pocket app — chances are pretty good that option won’t ever be available anywhere except on Sony Ericcson’s branded Playstation phone.
That’s a bummer, and the somewhat paltry iPhone and Android app we’re left with in the meantime is a bit disappointing.
