Star Wars: The Old Republic Patch 1.5 aka the Free-to-Play Armageddon Is Nigh
That’s right, tomorrow Bioware unleashes SWTOR patch 1.5 which is full of new content no one is going to care about because it’s all going to be overshadowed by the new free-to-play transition. To make this rollout a success, Bioware is trying to lure back past subscribers with offers of in-game currency based on subscription length. Whether or not this saves the game the way it did for Lord of the Rings Online depends largely on how far players can get for free and how much of the content considered critical for advancement will require cash. Given the heavy investment into the title and the recent mass layoffs at Bioware, this looks like their make it or break it moment for SWTOR. We’ll have a more detailed look at the Cartel system tomorrow.
This is quite the week for MMOs and we are not even half way through this month. Despite the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday we still have Guild Wars 2 Lost Shores event, Mech Warrior Online open beta, the 19th (!!) EverQuest expansion, EVE Online‘s $10k tournament, and the launch of SOE’s PlanetSide 2 to look forward to this month. And GameFront will be here to cover it all. And possibly make jokes at their expense. Ok, definitely.
