EverQuest Goes Free-to-Play
After 13 years of following a subscription-based model, EverQuest has gone free-to-play.
How the mighty have fallen.
But maybe this doesn’t mark the veteran MMO’s retirement. After all, EverQuest 2 saw “amazing growth” upon taking the F2P dive, with a 40 percent increase in daily log-ins. This may just be the next step in EverQuest’s success.
Back in 1999, EQ’s developers hoped the game would survive for six months. Thirteen years later, no one can contest the fact that the game received an unprecedented degree of success. Over the years, the developers continued to support the game with new content, which I’m sure has been integral to the game’s longevity.
I bet thirteen years worth of subscription fees adds up to a pretty penny.
