EverQuest II Dragon Development Video

This is of particular interest to the artistically inclined–especially those into 3D modeling. Watch character artist Christopher Atkins create the model for Lord Yelinak, a dragon boss NPC for Destiny of Velious, EverQuest II’s latest expansion, in this time-lapse video that condenses six days of work into a seven-minute video.

The project started with a request from one of EverQuest II’s game designers for an elderly dragon. He and Christopher Atkins then collaborated on defining what animations and actions would be required. From there, they had to decide to either create a new skeleton with new animations, or use an existing skeleton and then add new animations to it as needed. In this case they built on an existing skeleton which helped define the general shape of the creature. The team started with a few concept sketches, eventually settling on an approved concept and starting the modeling process.

It takes around 5-8 days to generate a model of this complexity from scratch using Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop and some proprietary tools. The time lapse video highlights 6 days of Christopher’s life as a character artist condensed to just a few minutes.

Very impressive stuff, watched with awe. I did a bit of 3D modeling in my Computer Games Programming, and it’s very difficult stuff. Grats to the man making a who dragon in less than a week!
