EverQuest’s Rain of Fear Expansion Launches Today
19th expansion?!? Wasn’t it just yesterday we were plummeting to our deaths off the platforms in Kelethin and coordinating naked newbie runs from Freeport to Qeynos? Oh, wait, I suppose that was 1999. Cue the Prince song as we look at the latest expansion from one of the longest running graphical MMORPGs on the market.
EverQuest: Rain of Fear continues the storyline introduced in the last two expansions. Now that the stolen power of the plane of Fear has been reclaimed, it’s falling on Norrath spreading all sorts of mayhem that can only be stopped by 5 more levels of quests, armor upgrades, crafting, and raiding.
Most of the expansion is a logical progression of the systems already in place (level cap is now 100!), but also introduces a few new features. Aggro meters are now visible so you have no excuse for not controlling yours. A new Slayer system rewards you for killing many, many, many monsters. And a collection system (a staple of EverQuest II), is being introduced for those of you who self-identify as completionists.
If you haven’t been back to EQ in many a moon, it’s free-to-play and you can now hire NPCs into your group to help you solo. It isn’t like the good ol’ days of 3am corpse runs in LGuk (that was fun, right?), but still has a thriving, dedicated community of players. And isn’t that what makes or breaks any MMO?
