Everybody Likes Free-to-Play MMOs More than Subscription Ones

Research firm Newzoo did a study on people who play sci-fi MMOs. Seriously, that’s a study. Amazing, I know.

Anyway, the study found that 36% of all MMO players in the United States prefer sci-fi MMOs. Of those folks, 84% play free-to-play MMOs, and 68% only play free-to-play MMOs.

Peter Warman, CEO at Newzoo, wondered what these numbers meant for Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is, last time I checked, a sci-fi MMO.

I am very curious to see how many free-to-play sci-fi gamers EA will be able to convert to [pay-to-play] gamers and what part will come from outside the current pool of sci-fi gamers, being complete newcomers, as well as the subscribers to Eve Online, WoW, Rift or any other AAA P2P MMO game.

I am curious, too*.

F2P is straight up . Only game that does F2P evenly in a descent sense is LOTR but even that you either have to grind your brains out or spend 5 bucks every time you reach a new game area of content to get the missions.
