Everything We Know About Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm

Table of Contents

BlizzCon 2011 kicks off on Friday and hopefully the powers that be will drop some Heart of the Swarm knowledge bombs on us. But before that happens let’s take a moment to recount what we already know about the upcoming sequel to Wings of Liberty.

The Story

Warning, there be spoilers ahead. If you haven’t beaten Wings of Liberty, go do that now. Frankly I’m disappointed that you haven’t done so already. Alright, now everyone who has beaten it remembers that Kerrigan has been once again transformed to her human self (well mostly, she kept the badass zerg hair) by the Xel’Naga artifact that Raynor activated on Char. HoTS will pick up immediately following these events with the newly human Kerrigan hunting down scattered Zerg broods. She’s even got herself a spiffy new ghost suit and hopefully some of her old ghost powers to go along with it.

As stated in her character bio on Blizzard’s HoTS page, “Kerrigan must find a way to restore her strength and regain control of the Swarm.”

But why is she trying to reunite the swarm? If I had to guess, I’d say that it’s preparation for a showdown with the Xel’Naga in the third Starcraft 2 game. I realize this is speculation on my part, but let’s think about what we know. During “The Prophecy” cutscene in Wings of Liberty, Kerrigan specifically told Zeratul that the Xel’Naga were coming back and that “the galaxy will burn with their coming.” It could be that Kerrigan was lying, but I’ve got 5 bucks that say the Xel’Naga are going to be the big bad in the final chapter and the three races are going to have to team up to defeat them.

Hang on, I’m getting ahead of myself. We still don’t know for sure who the main antagonist in this game is going to be. However, we do have a couple of prime suspects listed on the Blizzard HoTS page. Arcturus Mengsk was certainly intent on offing Kerrigan in the first game and I wouldn’t put it past him to send that sexy ghost, Nova to hunt Kerrigan down. We’ve also got a new baddy on the roster by the name of Za’Gara. She’s a “brood mother” which is basically a high ranking queen in the Zerg society and she’s out to fill the power vacuum that was left when Kerrigan became human and lost control of the swarm. I’d say the Vegas odds are on this “brood mother” being in the final showdown of HoTS.

Supporting Characters

So with Mengsk, Nova and Za’Gara out to get her, Kerrigan is looking sorely outnumbered. However, she’s got a few new characters in her corner as well. Abathur is some kind of Zerg abomination, consisting of parts from different Zerg species. He’s apparently “a genius at manipulating DNA and mutagen to modify the Swarm.” Abathur will most likely serve as the Zerg’s version of Egon Stetmann (that geeky scientist guy that upgraded your weapons and buildings in Wings of Liberty.) There’s also Izsha which is some kind of living storage unit for all Kerrigan’s plots and schemes when she was the Queen of Blades. Jim Raynor will also be returning, but I wouldn’t count on him being one of Kerrigan’s main crew.
