Ex-XCOM Developers Found Studio, Tout New Title: “Epoch”

It’s a story as old as time. Or at least as old as the second decade of the 21st century. Two developers from a mammoth studio have flown the coop, deciding instead to concentrate on bringing, in their words, “AAA quality to mobile and downloadable games.” Their first foray into this market will be Epoch, a cool-looking, Unreal-powered shooter set in a dystopian future.

Players will take control of a combat-ready robot that suddenly wakes up into a violent, shattered world. Making generous use of chest-high walls and acrobatic, robotic manuevers, they will tap their thumbs furiously onto touchscreens, trying to learn what led to all the crumbling masonry without getting riddled with laser fire.

The list of co-founders’ Andrew James and Ed Orman past accomplishments starts a little funky — with Fallout: Tactics and Tribes: Vengeance — before moving on to more impressive fare like Bioshock. Only they know why they left the XCOM team before the game was done, though saying “Ex-XCOM” out loud never really gets old. Regardless, Epoch looks like it has potential. Judge for yourself in the trailer below.
