Extra Credits Explains Firefall’s ‘Staged Content’ (VID)

The folks from Extra Credits have released a video that explains a big feature from the upcoming shooter MMO Firefall: Staged Content, or as Extra Credits calls it, Awesome Storyline Unlocks.

In essence, what Staged Content means is that towns, dungeons, and entire zones will only open up if the players achieve certain things in the game world. The design objective is to grant players a deeper feeling of ownership of the game world and create a real sense of community. Rather than just blaze through all the content as soon as it is released, players will have to work together to gain access to it.

Check out the video:

This whole concept does sound like a major gamble, and I must admit that I’m leery of the idea of having content ship with the game that remains inaccessible to me until factors outside of my control decide I can access it. It sounds suspiciously similar to on-disk DLC. But I’ll reserve judgement for when I try it out.

This is nothing new. The original Everquest had content that was locked behind world events, and so have a lot of other MMO’s since then. I guess the only original thing about it is that it seems a very large percentage of the game’s content will be locked behind world events.
