The Destructoid crew uncovered the above video which shows off what could be a really interesting Mario Bros mod. After watching the video in it’s entirety, my interest was piqued. Unfortunately, I have no idea where this mod can be obtained. If anyone knows, definitely drop us a comment below. I tried out some of my Google-fu techniques and could not find any success. I did locate some of the source sites, but unfortunately they were all written in Japanese and I was unable to translate the page.
Anyway, we’re on the hunt for this mod and if anyone can locate it, we’d greatly appreciate it. I’m not giving up on the quest just yet, but it appears this mod may be well-hidden somewhere on the internet. Internet research sometimes leaves you empty handed due to the excess of information available. Extra Mario Bros, are you an actual game? If so, where are you?

The guy never gets hit, yet he picks up every 1up he passes. Why bother?
But yeah, very cool indeed.

The patch can be found here: http://smbarchives.run.buttobi.net/
(go to the Lab File section and then it’s #162)
You can patch this file with a IPS patcher (Lunar IPS works fine) and you also need the smb1 rom.. i think this one will work: Super Mario Bros. (JU) (PRG0) [!].nes
and here’s a direct link to the patch for those too lazy to navigate

I don’t know but a lot of the graphics and some of the sounds seem to be taken from Super Metroid.

Totally awesome hack, finished it last night. He grabs the 1ups because you get a collection rating at the end, ala Super Metroid.

Here’s a location for lots of NES patches, including Extra Mario Bros:

Should note that some of the hacks on this site are poor-quality. But Extra Mario Bros. could well be the best out there!
