Like most people, I felt that the original Fable was decent, but that it lacked a certain “je ne sais quois” to be honest. However, the sequel not only sounds like it is going to not only be interesting, but it sure is looking that way too.
This short little video from Gamer’s Day may lack in the length department, but it delivers in the area of quality. Not only do you get to see some lighting effects and a few bits and pieces of combat, but the much debated dog companion is also seen running circles around you and your foes. I hope he does more than that, because if not, I will have to mean to him so that he will go away – which is one of the things you can do supposedly.
The game is promising also to give us more than a good vs evil choice when it comes to your actions. They are not as black and white as that in Fable 2 – kind vs. cruel, pure vs. corrupt, rich vs. poor, etc. Greed will also play a huge factor along with vanity. For example, during a certain part of the game a shadow creature must make someone suffer and to progress through your quest, you must decide if it will be you or a lonely woman walking through the forest. One of you will end up with a horribly scarred face and if you choose yourself, you will carry this face throughout the game which will effect the way people treat you. If you choose the woman, you leave her miserable. Every choice you make effects the rest of the world in the game, arrest a man – the town is crime free and affluent, release him – the town becomes a slum full of corruption and crime.
Another cool thing about Fable 2 is that you will be able to alter the cut-scenes in the game – granted, some you cannot, but in some you can interact with the characters in them. What you say or do in these affects the way the cut-scene plays out. Its just too bad that the video did not show us any of this, or the male and female hookers or any gambling, but maybe Lionhead is saving those bits of fun for a trailer closer to the release date – which is sometime in October.
At any rate, Fable 2 is looking to be a very highly ambitious project and I hope it not only pays off for Lionhead, but gamers as well. Development will be complete by next week, and the only thing left to do is test it for bugs and do a bit of optimizing, therefore, October is indeed looking pretty feasible.
