Fairy Tale V. 7 Released; Improved AI, New Kingdom Included
Civ 4 Mod Fairy Tale is one of those games that gets an A for effort, but a C overall. It’s a really awesome idea: like Age of Ice crossed with Charlemagne’s Wars, it’s a Mother Goose mashup that positively wallows in its derivative brilliance. Players choose between a number of fictional kingdoms based loosely on RPGs, fairy tales and folklore, without even a pretense of originality. And that’s a good thing. Dragons? Check. Ogres? Check. Princesses? Check. The problem is that single player campaign was a bit… easy. The AI seemed to play with both hands tied behind its back, while drunk. Version 7, released yesterday, claims to correct that problem with improved AI, and a brand spanking new kingdom to select from, based on Arabian folklore.
Kraxantine Sultanate is Fairy Tale’s version of the Middle East. Flying Carpets, Bazaars full of magical magicness, theme appropriate warriors, and of course camels. If, like me, you checked out the OG version to some disappointment, it might be time to give it another go. If you haven’t played yet, but you’re a fan of Bill Willingham and Neil Gaimen, whatever your complaints about level difficulty, this will almost certainly scratch a very satisfying itch. You can download your copy here. On interesting aside. As you can see from the pics above, the terrain looks pretty amazing. That is NOT how it’s going to look with your initial download. Graphics will appear as basically standard Civ 4 (which are great, but not as detailed). Fairy tale developer Antiscamp achieved these graphics using Blue Marble. In the meantime, here’s some video to whet your appetite for an unhistoric, near-copyright infringing strategy!
