    General Troubleshooting

Before breaking your head trying to figure out what’s wrong with your game, here are two simple steps to take to ensure you’ve done your due diligence.

Steam: If you cannot get the game to launch through Steam, make sure you’ve restarted your Steam client, then try again. You can also try verifying your game cache through Steam by accessing your Library, right-clicking on the game, selecting “Properties,” then the “Local files” tab, and clicking “Verify integrity of game cache.”

Drivers: Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

How to Disable Depth of Field

Far Cry 3 adds a post-processing effect filter that, on lower settings, doesn’t look all that good while still costing you a performance hit. By disabling the filter, you’ll achieve clearer, crisper visuals, less aliasing, and players have reported an FPS increase of about 10.

Click on the image to view a before-and-after:

Follow these steps to disable the filter:

    • Run Far Cry 3 and set the video settings to “custom.” Exit the game.
    • Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 3
    • Right click on GamerProfile.xml and select Open With -> Notepad.
    • CTRL+F and search for PostFxQuality. Set PostFxQuality=”false” and save the file.

Performance/Stuttering/FPS Issues with ATI Radeon Cards

If you’re experiencing FPS lag, stuttering, or generally poor performance while running Far Cry 3 with an ATI Radeon video card, start by downloading and installing the latest beta drivers that match your system.

Reports indicate that these performance issues are related to DirectX 11, and that setting the game to run on DirectX 9 will resolve the problems, as well as disabling MSAA and VSync in-game.

How to Remove All HUD/UI & Sound Indicators

If you’re not a fan of Far Cry 3′s HUD, or would simply like a more immersive experience, you can hide the HUD and UI elements, as well as the sound indicators, by following these steps.

Note: You will need to edit a DLL file with a HEX editor. Back up the file before editing it, or you will have to reinstall the game if anything goes wrong. You will need a HEX editor like HxD.

    1. Start by opening the DLL file with your HEX editor.
      • If you are running the game with DirectX 9 or 10, open \bin\FC3.DLL in your game installation folder (eg. Steam\steamapps\common\Far Cry 3\bin)
      • If you are running the game with DirectX 11, open \bin\FC3_d3d11.DLL in your game installation folder (eg. Steam\steamapps\common\Far Cry 3\bin)
    2. Search for “showuielement”
    3. In the next few lines, you will see S.h.o.w.U.I.E.l.e.m.e.n.t.
    4. Replace the S.h.o.w.U.I.E.l.e.m.e.n.t. with H.i.d.e.U.I.E.l.e.m.e.n.t.
    5. To remove all intrusive sounds, copy and paste each sound item from the list below into your HEX editor and search for TEXT, then replace the HEX value for the text with zeros.
      • sndCancelMission
      • sndArmorTutorial
      • sndObjectiveUpdatePopup
      • sndLogUpdatePopup
      • sndTutorialUnlockPopup
      • sndTutorialPopup
      • sndHintPopup
      • sndDetectionUpdate
      • sndDetected
      • sndMission_EnterZone
      • sndMissionStart

      • sndLevelUp
      • sndDefaultInteraction
      • sndSwitchGadget

Random Crashes with an NVIDIA Card

If you’re experiencing random crashes while playing Far Cry 3 and you have an NVIDIA graphics card — especially one from the GeForce 500 or 600 series — the latest beta drivers may help. You can download them here.

    How to Disable Ambient Occlusion

When playing Far Cry 3 on DirectX 11, you can’t disable Ambient Occlusion via in-game settings — you can only switch between different types of rendering techniques. In order to disable it completely, which would improve performance at the cost of enhanced shading visuals, follow these steps:

    • Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 3
    • Right click on GamerProfile.xml and select Open With -> Notepad.
    • CTRL+F and search for SSAOLevel. Set SSAOLevel=”0″ and save the file.

    How to Toggle Iron Sights

If you’d rather switch from having to hold down your iron sights key to being able to toggle aiming down the sights with the press of a button, follow these steps:

    • Go to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 3
    • Right click on GamerProfile.xml and select Open With -> Notepad.
    • CTRL+F and search for IronsightToggleMode. Set IronsightToggleMode=”1″ and save the file.

Thank you for these advices, but I’m still facing a problem with shadows. My shadows in game look like boxes which occur in every shadowy part and they pop-up from the game badly. For example shadow of a house is like a stupid box. Also I’ve noticed that these shadows follow my guy where ever I go. Annoying

Have anyone else experinced similar problems? I’m hoping that there is a solution to this, because it makes the game almost unplayable for me.

    Thanks in advance!

FYI anyone playing at Post processing high or above already, if you drop to “false” for this Depth of Field off tweak it’ll also turn off the DX9 “lite” ambient occlusion(not the same AO that you can control in the game settings on DX11) which some think makes a bit of a difference giving most textures more depth. Also motion blur which which shuts off at Very High or lower(maybe Ultra can’t remember).

I dropped Post from High to Medium and got like 10fps back, more valuable to me. Without that AO you’ll still get shadows just fine, contours will just be a little less pronounced without them

Actually, setting PostFxQuality to false turns ON some filter and makes the game run SLOWER.
