FIFA 13 Preview: The Physics of Unpredictability

Introducing unpredictable gameplay can lead to unpredictable design challenges, and despite FIFA 13′s meticulous innovations, McHardy, Channon, Rutter, and their colleagues will always have something to improve. Understandably, when interviewed, they were more interested in discussing FIFA’s hard-won successes than they were in revealing continuing frustrations — those will have to wait until next year, when they unveil FIFA 14. Still, they seem to revel in the vast unpredictability of soccer. Said Rutter:

“We have a material to base our work on that’s brilliant. There’re so many different ways in which a football game can unfold. There’re so many different ways of looking at it as a grouping of different things, from the way that humans look and move, through the physics of balls and nets, through to strategy and intelligence of sportsmen and the strategy and tactics of the manager. There are all these different things that go into it. There’s an infinite supply of inspiration.”
