Until the end of its service several improvement programmes and modernization efforts kept this vehicle at a modern standard. Additionally, the Leopard 1 provided the basis for a whole vehicle family including the Bergepanzer 1 armored recovery vehicle, the Biber armored bridge layer, the Dachs armored engineer vehicle as well as the Gepard SPAAG.
