Rcon SE

rconse.zip | 5 MB

This mental skill is even more necessary if you run a server with a mod, which adds more commands to the server. Lostingamma has created a program, called Rcon SE, that will allow a person to connect to a server, and control it, as if they were right in there. This could be helpful if you need to make some changes on your server, but don’t have enough time to start up JKA, or you can’t find your CD. This program can even be used a friends house, even if the friend has never installed JKA on his computer. Another great thing, is when you connect to a server, you can see some of the basic settings on your server, right when you see the main part of the program. The name of the server, its mod (if any), version, game type, and more. Then, you can send commands to the server through a text bar. It also has extra buttons for servers that are basejka, or JA+. So, if you forget a command, and you have a basejka or JA+ server, there is a possibility there is a button for it. If your server isn’t running either of these, like if you were running the ForceMod, it will still work, you can submit ForceMod commands through the text bar. You can restart the map and shutdown the server with this program too. There is also a Help System included, for those of you that need help. As a bonus, it comes with an installer, that way you can easily put it on your computer. -Airm

RCON Master for Jedi Academy

rcon_master.zip | 68.43 KB

first helpful tools for server hosters in this particular series. Now, having moved on to a more modern engine, additional tools are necessary to ensure the safety of home-grown -- or even rented -- servers. All server hosts should know about rcon -- remote control. There are various utilities out there allowing more rcon control, however in case you didn\'t think there were enough we\'ve got another one here. I\'ve had a look at it and if it works like advertised I\'m relatively impressed. I mean I\'ve seen rcon programs before. Most of them are either confusing or... well... small, with not very many functions. This particular utility features a custom-made piece of software to allow you the greatest amount of control for your server from your desktop. The basics are included, like server status and kicking/banning utilities, however the rest of the commands you might find yourself needing are all there, arranged in easy-to-use menus. Check the screenshots for a better idea of how this particular utility works. Keep in mind that the author has dubbed this a \'beta\'. Be sure to use it out and report any bugs so he can improve the software for future versions. ~Inyri

JK2 & JK3 Forcestring Server Crash Fix

forcecrashfix.zip | 1.41 MB

an exploit fix that will work for both JK2 and JK3. Now I'm a dunce in this department, so I'm pleased that Gamall included a very detailed read-me regarding the exploit. Apparently if a user inputs an improper force value, he or she can manage to crash a server when the changes are applied. This utility should fix this problem by some means that are beyond my comprehension. But they should be fixed, which is the important bit. The source code is also included for those that may want to consider implementing this crash fix into their own mods. For those interested this is also technically an update for his [file="84044"]BaseJKA Security Fix[/file]. This utility is basically an updated version of that with the crash fix implemented into it. A separate read-me for that is included inside the archive. Be sure to check it out! ~Inyri

Ultimate JKA Server Restarter (Linux)

purpose of these scripts, and then an overview of the changes for this latest version!
Yeah, I know what you're thinking. "Do we REALLY need an application that just restarts a server?" Yes, actually, for this beast is not all as it seems. Before I begin, let me preface by stating that this review will be applied both to the Linux and Windows versions, but due to our team not particularly being fluent in Linux, it will covers the Windows version only. Linux server users are encouraged to give feedback in the comments. Now then, essentially what this application does is make your server a much more dynamic and efficient fishy. Though it requires a lot of reading and configuring, you will essentially have a hall monitor to make sure the server gets booted up, and also probably a handy feature for some of you: Dynamic map rotation. Sick of playing the same rotation each day? Configure the necessary rotation file and you can enjoy a nice diverse map list the next time you fire the server up! (Except me, I'll still be stuck on mp/FFA3 with the rest of the damned. _) This seems like a pretty overdue mod, I reckon. Hopefully it's come within enough time for people to enjoy and abuse it. Only time will tell... - Averus Retruthan
Ok, changes for this version, as listed in the readme, include:

Log server feature added.
A recursive bash script was added to replace the time based server status check (running/not running).
Ncat check method added.
Dynamic Rotation monthly type added.
Dynamic Rotation map limit per rotation is now unlimited.
Added Dynamic Rotation rehash feature.
Dynamic Rotation is no longer stored with the server CFG. Instead a exec line is added, and the rotation is stored with an auto-generated file.
HTML server status page generator added.
CGI Script added.
Pid files have been added. script.pid for the script, and serverstarter.pid for the recursive script running the server.
Filesdir variable was removed. A new variable (scriptdir) has been added to check for the script directory automatically.
User variable was removed. The user is now checked automatically in the script.
User variable to run the JKA server in the Nmap check method has been added.
Added options nohup and killserver in the jkascript script.
Added a Nmap path variable.
Error checks have been greatly improved and spread out through the entire code.
Error and exit codes have been added.
The entire code was re-checked, re-written, further improved and optimized for performance.
Updater has been further improved.
And finally, a note from the author: "For those using version 3.xx, they will need to download the new updater to be able to autodownload this new version." Linux Updater: http://www.zombiehugs.com/jascript/linux/updater Now, non of that really means anything to me and so I cant really give it a full and proper review. box that it opens on your desktop. For someone who is running a temporary server from their own computer this probably isn’t necessary. However, if you have a dedicated server that you have bought and that you use for your clan, or RP group for instance, then this will come in very useful. It enables you to connect to a particular servers IP address, and providing you have the Rcon username and password, will allow you to execute various commands on the server, sending a message to a player for instance, or kicking someone who is misbehaving. It also allows you to view a list of the current players and their status, change a player over to another team to balance the teams out and so on. A full list of the many features in this utility is available in the readme. All in all, an excellent utility here. I am pretty sure that I used a previous version of this back when I used to have a clan server, and it served me well. Logs Filter

logsfilter.zip | 651.22 KB

I'll get right on that. It's hard to give a substantial review to what amounts to a search tool for server logs, because it's a straight forward file, designed to be used intuitively by the masses (presumably). However, searching through server logs can be a tedious task, which is why you need something to filter them, straightforward or not. And that's what you have here. The ability to filter through logs and only retain relevant information based on strings entered. I'm not sure how much more I can really say without going into techno-babble, and I very nearly got fired the last time I did that. Check the included docu.txt file for further details. Just two slight niggles, really. First, it's command-line based, and not all of the server admins for JA - in fact, I'd be willing to bet hardly any of them - have experience with UNIX-based operating systems and CLIs. Hey, welcome to the age of graphical user interfaces, where people consider such things obsolete despite the fact command line tools are extremely valuable for a lot of things. :( Second niggle, is the documentation. It assumes former knowledge, and in this case, for a tool useful to the masses at large, I'd have expected the app to be better documented for those not in-the-know. After all, no one will ever know if no one ever teaches. Source code is included under the GNU General Public License, as always, but unless you're a programmer it won't help much. Nice to know the option is there, though. Other than that, though, another good utility that's practical and useful for server admins. Emphasis on server, though, because this does require you to be running a dedicated server process with SSH access to the system, so "glorified LAN games" (home-hosted servers) are left in the dark, as they are for just about anything else server-based short of JA+; there's a reason many recommend against those, after all. But, that's enough soapboxing. Another good service rendered to the server managers of the world, from Gamall's rather over-worked brain. I'd bet hosting companies themselves would find good uses for this, too. ~Kouen

Standard Input Server (RCon chat etc)

standardinputserver.zip | 1.57 MB

that's logged in the console is transmitted to the server in real-time for rendering by either admins or end users, supposedly without needing SSH or RCON access. Essentially, you can read the server logs as it's actually happening. How? Telnet, of course! If you're one of the precious few on this site who knows the first thing about Telnet, you can essentially use a Telnet client to connect to a JA server via this plugin and communicate with the players. Well, to my understanding, anyway. I had a little... trouble, trying to talk to myself. This won't be of much use to Windows users hosting glorified LAN games (which technically would be a "WAN game", but that leaves the door open for snide remarks so I'll stick with "glorified LAN"), since it's compiled to work with dedicated servers hosted on Unix-based operating systems. However, if you do happen to own/rent/operate a dedicated server running on a Unix OS, and want the ability to check server logs in real-time or allow others to communicate with players on the server via Telnet, this is a useful server add-on. Well, more like a server-within-a-server. Sort of. Just make sure to read the documentation. ~Kouen

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail since I can't explain it any better than the read-me, but this should be ideal for server managers who want a bit more hands-off (or more hands-on) control over their servers. Each management mode brings a little something to the table, so folks are bound to find something that works for them. BaseJKA Security Fix

basejka_gamall_fix_1.1.zip | 3.12 MB

inherent terrible-ness of JKA's built-in logging system with various enhancements to server logs. Sounds good, doesn't it? Well, I'm going to keep this short, because otherwise I might end up circumventing FileFront's Acceptable Use Policy, and being fired and possibly sued is never a good thing. Let me just say that I found one inherent flaw with this. It only tends to work against these attacks when they are generated by the various utilities scattered around the internet. When using such a utility (which the author kindly - albeit unintentionally - provided me with for testing purposes), the patch worked like a dream on blocking Denial Of Service attacks. It was only semi-successful with the fake players - I managed to flood JA+, Lugormod and Makermod servers to the point of them having hardware crashes, yet JAE was tight as a button. (I didn't try ClanMod, so if anyone would like to test it for me and post the results in the comments, it would be appreciated - just let your server provider know that you're going to attempt a flood attack first so that they don't cut your service!) (I've never had a buffer overflow error in my life, and wouldn't know how to replicate it even if I tried, since baseJKA automatically caps off command strings at a reasonable limit below the crash-point level.) However, when not using a utility - i.e. carrying out manual attacks - there was really no change in the effects between when this patch was installed and when it wasn't. I still managed to thrash the servers* the same way I could even if the patch hadn't been installed, but I believe that's probably because unlike a program, humans are dynamic - we don't follow a pre-set subroutine and therefore we're less predictable, and thus the patch can't really block us because it doesn't know what to expect, therefore since it doesn't know what to expect it doesn't know how to react. So, as a general rule, against someone who really knows what they're doing, the effects of this security fix will be limited. However, since that kind of "hacker" is generally working at security software companies earning a six-figure salary rather than sitting at home crashing game servers, all you have to worry about are the little Matrix-era haxor kiddies who make up stories about "hackin' mainframes and shizzle" when they tell their friends about how they downloaded an Eminem MP3 - and against that kind of person, this patch will do a very nice job of securing your server. Server owners, this patch may just do you a few favours, so it's a very useful add-on to have in your defensive arsenal. Oh, and as a side note, if any of you are one of the haxor kiddies I described above, then please do society a favour, and take the blue pill. >_> ~ Kouen * I would just like to add as a postscript, that I would never do such a thing for any reasons other than purely scientific or technological ones.
There are various changes in this 1.1 update, and rather than speculating on them despite having little knowledge in this department, I'll just list them for server enthusiasts to mull over themselves:

The help page is now automatically displayed only on the very first connection, as opposed to connections when you are carried over from a previous map, or at the end of a duel turn.
Names such as "**Spamzor" are automatically converted to "*Spamzor", so a display bug, causing chat lines from such a player to be displayed in both the chat box and the server broadcast line, cannot be exploited anymore.
Fixed a false positive in my bot detection scheme: bots were detected as a fake player attack ; although this had no real consequence, it was a source of confusion in the logs
Logs now differentiate connections from bots and from real players.
Messages from the dedicated server have been made slightly more visible: the tag is now [SERVER], with colors. I would have liked to do the same with the /svsay command, but it can't be altered, as it is hard coded into jampded instead of jampgame. Go figure...
The IP is now logged each time somebody changes their names.
Added the /(t)ime client command, displaying the local time of the server
Added cvar ga_doNotAllowDualKataSpin, default 0, preventing anyone in a dual kata from spinning like a madman. (slightly buggy, as the screen seems to vibrate when moving the mouse, but it works.)
Added cvar ga_nameLengthLimit: names will be truncated not to exceed that length. Note that color escape sequences, such as ^1, are not counted.
Some ga_* cvars are now marked as serverinfo (external tools can read them).
Added the /info client command and ga_serverInfo cvar. /info displays the contents of the cvar. Admins can put rules, etc in there, and any player can read it anytime.
Anti model/color change spam/lag: any player can now freely change their info only 50 times per map (unless they reconnect of course). After that, they need to wait for three full seconds between each change. This should not inconvenience any legitimate player, and protects everyone on the server from the lag which can be created by fast and furious sustained userinfo change.
Added another log file, ga_ConnectLog.txt, listing every connection and full userinfo, and nothing but that, which is now created by the server.
The logs now use real time.
Make sure to check out the rest of the read-me for more features and more details on these updates. Also keep in mind that this mod is meant to be used with baseJA and does not promise protection with other server-side mods. This also includes source code for those interested! ~Inyri

Command-line Quake3 Server Commander

qcmdrelease.zip | 149.33 KB

for covering the PotDs for you guys while I was gone! Anyway, that's not what you guys care about is it? You care about the file! This little server utility seems simple enough. I'm not an expert in these kinds of things, but from what I can tell this is a handy little server utility that will allow you to access server admin protocols without having to be in the server or use an rcon client. Also from what I can tell the real treat here is you can automate the process which is something you apparently can't do with rcon. Someone can correct me if this is incorrect because, as I said, server management isn't my thing. However this tool does seem pretty handy for those of you hosting dedicated servers that would like a little more hands-off control. Also, as an added bonus, it not only works for all games built on the Quake 3 engine (such as Jedi Outcast!) but also supports non-Windows operating systems! ~Inyri

BaseJKA Security Fix

patch. I'm even more sorry that I happened to do it during a ranked ladder TFFA match that I was completely unaware of at the time. Can you ever forgive me? :( On to the review! This patch supposedly prevents various types of attacks on JKA servers. The attacks in question are Denial Of Service, buffer overflow, "fake players". Advanced JKA Map Cycles Generator

to run a server. Like I said, this is used for making map cycles. And this doesn’t only mean: “Go to this map, and this map, and this map”. It means (if you do it right): “Go to this map for this long, go to this map this many times, for such and such time limit”. Now, while I write this, I start to think of how to actually do that. However, I can’t really test my thoughts out without taking a bunch of time, and well, this program is easier to use. Kudos to the author for making this, although I don’t feel like I’ll be using it. Most people are content with just having maps rotate. But, if you want to make a nice script with this, then do so. Again, intelligence is required to use this. ~Zach

There is another version for Jedi Outcast, and I wonder why the author didn\'t just combine all the Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy programs into one big one. Oh well. This is a good tool for server managers. ~Zach

they want to play with or whatever you\'d check a server for. There are several features in this utility that would be very useful for server admins. You can enter your rcon password and do server maintenence, such as changing maps or kicking lamers remotely. One of the coolest features I saw was an option to have the program email you when your server goes down. Now, I tested this feature, and I never got an email, but maybe I missed something else I was supposed to configure. I dunno. There was also a feature that would allow you to set it up so the program would play a sound when the server goes down. I tested that too and it didn\'t work either. *shrug* It seems fairly user-friendly. So give it a try and let me know what you guys think. I currently use ServerWatch and it\'s quite reliable. I doubt I\'ll be switching to AGE Reloaded. Especially since I didn\'t notice one of the most valuable features that ServerWatch does have. If you\'ll notice in the bottom right corner of the screenshot there, I have three icons there (2,0,0). ServerWatch does that for me and when a server is down, I see a little down arrow in place of the number. If AGE Reloaded does that, and all of the other things it claims it does, then I might consider switching. Something that may sway your decision on whether using this or another server watch program would be that AGE Reloaded is free.
The only difference between 2.0 and 3.0 is that some bugs were fixed, it now supports BF:V, there\'s autoupdate support and there\'s a graphic tool for the server monitor. To really get an idea of what this utility is all about, read my previous review above. :) ~AmosMagee

Soldiers of Fortune, Elite Force, and more. It allows you to have easier and closer control over your gaming server. This file is only for people with or access to a Quake 3 powered gaming server. In my opinion, this sounds most promising and a must download for those of you who can use it. For more in-depth information, see the readme. WORKS FOR JEDI KNIGHT II AND JEDI ACADEMY.
Technical Data: Pros: 1. Out-of-game rcon abilities. Cons: 1. N/A Rating: 10/10 JEDIofONE :mepimp:
