However, this has been done many times before, and I personally think it's not necessary to download these version switchers when you can just back up your .exe file for 1.0 before installing 1.1. However, if you installed the patch and didn't back up your 1.0 .exe, then you may find this somewhat useful. It should be noted that this particular version switcher only works for the DVD version of the game. If you don't have the DVD version, don't download this. 3D Object Converter

3dobjectconverter.zip | 3.01 MB

don\'t really know how to use it, so I\'m stealing quotes and stuff for this review. The posts at Gametoast (specifically, from psych0fred) is where I\'m getting these from:
So there\'s this program online called 3D Object Converter (http://web.t-online.hu/karpo/) and it\'s shareware. I\'ve tried using it periodically and it never quite did what I wanted it to, but recently I found version 3.8 supports Empire at War .ALO files so I was using it to convert all of the EAW models for Battlefront. That\'s not the cool part. The program wouldn\'t quite work right when batching so each file needs to be saved one by one to retain all the materials. This is fine since I was importing the saved files into a another program to do some minor cleanup and saving before importing the final obj file into XSI for even more cleanup and exporting. So I decided to email the guy and let him know the batch conversion didn\'t work right and told him exactly what I was doing with it. So he emails me back and tells me he had fixed the bug in the version under development (3.9) and that he added support for MSH files. So I look on his site and sure enough in the development section just days ago he added Battlefront msh file support for file types it imports. He sent me a dev copy of the program and I tried it out. Depending on the model it works great, worst case scenario there are some texture read problems but the way I use the program that\'s normal, I just clean it up in another program. I imported a pistol, looked great. I imported a unit (Like) he was almost perfect, one of the textures chokes and I think I could see his shadowvolume but I didn\'t save the file and dissect it in another program because the dev version was not registered. I tried opening some animation msh files and could see the bones but can\'t say whether their corrd\'s are retained. I would assume not.
He continues:
It\'ll also help people create new models from existing ones, like I\'m doing with the Venator. You can also dig through the assets and extract things like backpacks and jetpacks and peices of objects to assemble them as new ones. It saves lots time in model creation when you have prefab parts to work with. The way I use this program is a bit unconventional but I have spent a lot of time converting models so had found the best way to do what I need to do. In general I use whatever program I need to extract game models and convert them into a standard format like OBJ or 3DS or XSI. There are many different programs, all game specific and the more game specific the better they work. The best program I have found has been discontinued but can still be found on P2P networks -- it\'s called Right Hemisphere\'s Deep Exploration. It\'s basically like 3D Object Converter or Unwrap 3D only it was created by a professional company so it was pretty full featured, supports many file formats and allows a limited amount of editing. So what I do is extract the models from the game assets, use a converter like 3D Object Converter to extract and save the assets as a standard file format, then typically I open that file in Deep Exploration and do materials/texture fixes in that program. for example with Empire at War assets I needed 3DOC to exract the models and save them, and OBJ files seemed the most intact. But when I imported the OBJ file into XSI from there the model was not oriented properly and other things weren\'t quite right. So instead I open the OBJ in Deep Exploration first, which handles it fine. I can then tweak the object which most means applying the textures to the right materials using info from 3DOC as reference, then I resave it as an OBJ, fixing the orientation and sometimes scaling differences in the pre-save options. That OBJ if I re-open it in Deep Exploration is now jacked because of the orientation changes I made, but when I import it into XSI it looks perfect. In XSI I then clean it up and build it out for Battlefront by getting rid of uneeded geometry, fixing or tweaking and textures and verts, adding collision, shadowvolumes, bones, hardpoints, etc. Typically models from other games are only good for the visible geometry and games like EAW need a lot of poly extraction and merging to create new objects that can be articulated for Battlefront. The creator of 3DOC tells me he hopes to have version 4.0 out next week but he\'s got a day job so he\'s not sure. Keep in mind you\'ll have to purchase/register to save with it but if you are a heavy modder it\'s worth it. It\'s just one of those software utilities you find youself going back to time after time as you work with different games. I have other weird tricks I use to extract models, there\'s a program that can also capture and OpenGL data so in theory ANY rendered model being displayed in ANY program can be captured with what amounts to a screencapture utility that reverse engineers the data being sent to the monitor and saves it to an OBJ file. It didn\'t work with EAW. It\'s kind of hit or miss, most games have extractors that work better. Since it didn\'t work I searched for the ALO extractor until I found 3DOC.
See the thread at Gametoast for the full thread. .Rikino

the effort made to do something that's not the clones. A couple points, though. First - the textures don't have their alpha texture added back in, and so this'll make them look too "shiny" in-game. Secondly, it looks like a regular paintbrush tool was used to draw on these, and that never looks as good as one might like. It looks much better if specific sections (with much more delineation on the edges) are selected and recolored. imaginative speculation is unnecessary. See them below. To the author: There are better ways of selecting areas than a magic wand tool (or whatever the intuitive selection tool in your graphical app is) - path your regions out and separate them into layers to make better selections. There are better ways of adding color than single hues paintbucketed in - at the very least, use some kind of overlay so that the underlying texture is preserved. Your detail is entirely lost when you make textures like this. -Mav

Despite the above quote by the author that assures that all the files necessary are present, there are still a number of mesh files missing (all the weapons' models and textures, not to mention the actual textures of the units), not to mention the fact that you will still have to have a mod map made to use these in. The faults of the previous file are no different here, with the exception of the awards weapons, which at least look to be fixed. In any case, download if you want, but honestly - you're better off building your own side. counts in Conquest mode, so that you don't have your games ended by attrition, or for whatever other reason you might choose. As mentioned by the author, there's a chance your antivirus software may alert you to this program; it has to do with the means by which the program actually lets you input the "freeze" command (explained in the readme). He certifies that so long as it's downloaded from this site, it will be virus-free. Kouen's staff here at Filefront, so it can be assumed fairly safely that you can trust his word on this. I also did a cursory virus scan of the .exe file, and it appears to be fine, but as the author mentions, feel free to scan it yourself. Give it a try, it might be a nice alternative for those of you who like winning conquest... by actual conquest. And as with anything that's not just a simple plug-and-play map, I would urge you to read the readme. -Mav A note from the author:
A quick trainer I cobbled together in my spare time that freezes reinforcement counts for both teams in Conquest mode. Figured I'd put it out there for anyone else who might want something like this. If you guys don't host trainers, then that's cool, I guess. Checked it extensively, it's virus-free, but I'd advise running your own scans anyway, whoever downloads this - just as two heads are better than one, so are two virus scanners. :p
skins here that are a bit strange - the Darth Nihilus one seems to be a photosourced image pasted onto sidious\'s face without proper resizing, and looks very bizarre. The wookie and twilek skins also while being claimed to be \'improved\' don\'t seem to be - the wookie has a single fur/skin/eye tone and the twilek has details (tentacle bands, details on pants) removed. of these textures seem like they\'re pretty much - if not the same - made using the same techniques. One or two are fairly passable (the rock texture at least looks different), but none of them are incredibly good or, more importantly, any better than the choices that will already be available in the modtools. Another point to note is that they\'re sized oddly - at 400*400, they\'re too small to effectively stretch to 512*512, and so to use them in pretty much anything you\'ll need to compress them to 256*256, which means that the extra size is unnecessary. Since they\'re digitally created textures anyway, it would have been a lot better to simply choose a more workable size when making them. To the author(s), I would suggest experimenting a little more with the tools you have available to you. Read up on some in-depth tutorial for whatever image editing application you\'re using (GIMP in this case) and learn to make a variety of textures. Right now the \"jagged-brush-scribble-then-blur\" technique is producing some textures that don\'t have a lot of differentiation for you. Work with a specific goal in mind rather than (and this is only a guess) making something and then deciding what it looks like after the fact. You can see a couple of the textures in the pictures below; give them a try if you like. Keep in mind that you will probably have to have some kind of experience with modeling to use these, as there are very few stock models you can simply use single-pattern textures with. -Mav

here, most likely exactly what you would expect on an army who is not trying to look like a platoon of clowns. Not at all. What is surprising is that the author shows that he can use layers to some degree (the Fett reskins show that he used an effect texture on a second layer), but that he must have just ignored this on some of the other reskins (e.g. the engineer), because they've got what looks like magic-wand-selected areas (which are almost always insufficient). In the future, I'd recommend that the extra time is spent on all the reskins so that not only do they look consistent with each other, but so that they don't look sloppy, as just using a magic-select will abet. know that I'll rail day in and day out about how we don't really need every new set of clone trooper retextures (which a vast majority of these retextures are). However - if you're going to submit new textures for the clone troopers, do it like this author has! This pack is a large (over 50!) set of different and unique textures for clones. Yes, there are the old standbys (Xth legion, etc.), but there are also some creative uses of the skin with original texture work - which is a welcome change from the usual "recolor-refilter" method of retexturing. So yes, it is large for a skinpack, and yes, it is basically just clone troopers. It's not necessarily something I'd care for myself, but I know a lot of people like to have a large selection of pre-made retextures on hand. To those people I say "download!" Jet Trooper Units

jet_trooper_units_source_files.rar | 4.85 KB

Well, enjoy using these and happy modding!
This is basically a side mod without the minor work done of munging it. Incidentally, that means that the minor work done of bug-checking it hasn't been done either, and just looking it over really fast, there are a couple obvious errors in the .odfs - perhaps a little extra nugget of fun included for whoever downloads them? (Misspelling, award weapons, et.al.) The .req also contains about twenty unnecessary references which are not included in the .odf packet, and you will of course have to add in the meshes to whatever side you munge these with - unless you drop these directly into a stock REP side, in which case you'll end up with an incredibly bloated side addon. Since the units don't use default names, you'll also have to use these in a mod map - you can't just replace your stock REP side and hope to use these units. I'll never say "no" to a file that doesn't break the rules, but honestly, there's so very little effort put into this set of "assets" that I do have to shake my head a little. To the author - please make sure to put a little more time and effort into things you're uploading. -Mav

words:
This is my new Version Switcher! This is designed for people to be able to easily and quickly switch between versions 1.0 and 1.1 of Battlefront II. If you have a clan on 1.0 but want to play on a big dedi on 1.1 in the middle of the night, this is for you. This is also helpful for those wanting to play on 1.0, but also want to play mods, as 1.1 is better for working with mods than 1.0. This version big improvements over the previous version: -It is designed to be more simple and user-friendly (meaning an easier install, a simpler ReadMe, and more help from inside the program). -It allows the user to clarify which disc version they have so that they don't receive any disc errors or have problems launching the game. So this switcher can be optimized to work with your copy of Battlefront II, making this switcher compatible with ANY disc version. -It lets users to backup their original Battlefront files before the Switcher is used, so that in case the Switcher is unusable, the old files can be replaced. -The actual switching now includes the copying of more files that may be essential to either version, rather than just the main .EXE file. When 1.0 is upgraded to 1.1, not just the main .EXE is replaced. Several other files are also replaced that are different than the original 1.0, and if a 1.1 exe is mixed in with old 1.0 files, there could be a crash. -Also, as a side element, the program can tell you what your License Key is, just in case you misplaced your manual and forgot it. This program has not been tested with every possible configuration. Though I have optimized this to work with every disc version, some people may have problems. Getting feedback is essential to improving my program so that everyone can have the chance to switch between version 1.0 and 1.1 with success!
All the textures look like they had color-selected areas and then bucket-fills done on them, to create the delightful effect of solid colors all over the place with several awkward lines interspersed among them. I am not sure if this was the author's intent (or if they meant to do something else but became satisfied with these), but really, these need to be done a little differently to look good. At least when only Hue/Sat changes are done, the texture's detail is preserved. In this case, detail is lost and unnecessary sloppiness is added. For the future, I would suggest manually drawing your selection areas and then doing tinting instead of trying to select by color or shade. -Mav

than the original skins but they look decent enough to me. Though I suppose you can't really know how good they look until you test them out in-game and see what they look like on the clones. So if you're a modder and like the look of the sample skins below then give the pack a download and try them out. Just be sure to give credit where it's due if you decide to release any work that uses these. ~Era~

Most of the textures in here look like they took some time - and while they may just be recolors, they're still pretty decent. So if you like what you see in the screenshots, be sure to download the pack, because the screens only reflect a few of the textures. A more exhaustive (although not comprehensive) list may be found in the readme below. -Mav

files are included in the modtools assets. It looks like the cape might have been changed a little, since it does have a "modified" date. It's worth mentioning that if you plan to use this, you'll have to set up the .msh file correctly, since as it is, it won't read the body texture. Also, the cape won't show up if you try and munge it ingame, since the name of the cape's .odf was changed but it wasn't edited in the .msh. I can't really recommend this file, it doesn't have much work done to it and it needs more to even be useable. a prime example. Most of the skins in here are just that - skins that have had nothing done to them except changing the saturation and hue of the entire skin at once. It's a pretty sloppy effect, and when one is adjusting the color of the skin, they should at least take the time to make sure things like dirt stains turning purple don't happen. There are a couple skins in here that look decent, but they're virtually indistinguishable (except maybe that they're lower detail) from a couple skins already in the assets: the stock rep_inf_htrooper.tga and the stock rep_inf_sharpshooter.tga. The author did a nice job trying to vary the different colors of the skins for different uses, but the quality here is low and I would probably recommend making some touched-up versions of these skins before they ever get used in a map. -Mav

The reskinning isn't actually that bad at all. The author recolored the trimming, for the most part, on all of the skins included, though a several also recolored the other parts. The skins are believable too, and would not look out of place in a map. However, the third Episode 3 Trooper skin was...strange. It looked like it would fit in one of Dann Boeing's maps, though. Great work on this pack, for what a simple thing it was. No screenshots for the moment. I might upload some later. NOTE: DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS IF YOU ARE NOT MAKING A MAP OR A MOD. scripts that run every level. Usually they're fairly simple and are precompiled for you by the initial munge, but if you want to create a campaign map, they take a substantial amount of extra coding. What the Mission-Scripter here does is help take some of the guesswork out of this. This could be especially helpful if you're new to coding campaign scripts, and don't want to worry about making simple typos that ruin your .lua. Like any tool, this will have a bit of a learning curve, but give it a little time and I think newbie .lua coders will be able to use it effectively. Additionally, you might even learn something from what you're writing in there! I would hope that this inspires a few more modders to learn how to do objective scripting, which can really open up what you can do with Battlefront 2. Enjoy! (Note: This is a tool for modders only, and you should only try using this if you already have some basic knowledge about how .lua scripts are set up.) -Mav

the ons where the base armour colour is changed are crude at best, and look like all he did was use a fill tool in mspaint. this seems even more likely considering the terrible inconsistencies in the colored stripes. Of the six clones there are two dark clone variants(red and blue) which have greay armour, there is the naboo troper from an older release which is a yellow clone, the para trooper (light green), a purple trooper and a reskin for the jetpack making it plain white. All are episode 3 clone. Aso included is a texturing tutorial that I find questionable but it should work nonetheless.
