Bob did a really fine job on updating our vehicle view system. As of now the driver is able to switch from 1st person view to a 3rd person view. Here you can see some ingame footage of this.

This is still a work-in-progress, but gives you an idea of the final result. As a human player, you won't be entirely defenseless. You can use the alien vision to your advantage, as you can actually blend in with the shadows.
