Final Fantasy VIII Hits Steam With Free Cheat Tool

As of today, if you’re into playing old JRPGs on PC you can grab Final Fantasy VIII from Steam for $12. These are exciting times, because there are people who think it’s the best of all those games and you might agree with them!

Interestingly enough, FFVIII on Steam comes with some bonuses, one of which I totally would have expected to be attainable via microtrasaction. That one is the Magic Booster, which adds 100 units of whatever spells you have in your inventory — this is merely a tool in the launcher, and not a $2 DLC consumable. Pretty awesome. The other is Chocobo World, a minigame that interacts with FFVIII proper if you do it right.

Folks on Steam are talking about how this edition of the game comes with the crappy old MIDIs, and for whatever reason this is a complaint. Long live the MIDIs!

Why? If we were talking about FF13 I could understand the cynicism, but I don’t understand why it’s directed at 8. If this were being published by Capcom, again, I could understand the cynicism but 7 didn’t have the microtransactions so I don’t understand why you assumed 8 would. If SE were going to milk any of the old Final Fantasy’s of monetary nostalgic value, it would have been 7.

In anycase, with the release of 8 on Steam, this gives me hope. I bought 7 over the summer but I can’t seem to get into it. When I do play it, I find that I’m forcing myself to play it. I never really cared for 8, my roommate at the time of it’s original release played the ever living sh!t out of that game. 9 on the other hand……well if 8 is getting a Steam release then it’s only a matter of time before 9 gets a Steam release and then I’ll be really happy. 9 was my favorite FF of the PSX era.

I doubt FF9 is getting a Steam release because it never had a PC release to begin with. The Steam releases of FF7 and FF8 are just re-releases of the original PC releases of these games.
