Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Hits PS4 in April

Well played, Square Enix. Well played.

Square announced this morning that the PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy XIV: a Realm Reborn will be released on April 14, and they’re earning my praise because they’re allowing all PS3 FFXIV players to transfer their characters — and all the precious loot they’ve gathered — to the PS4 for the low, low price of free.

The migration will begin on April 11 and Square said it will announce details on how to make the transition soon. Of note: once you make the leap to the PS4 version of A Realm Reborn, there’s no going back. At least not for free. Square said that if you want to play both versions, you’ll have to own two copies of the game and have separate characters on each.

If you’re not so sure about the PS4 version of FFXIV yet (can’t say I blame you, what with the long and tumultuous history of the MMORPG formerly known as FFXIV: Online), you can test the waters beginning on February 22. That’s when the PS4 beta test will begin, and it’s open to everyone.

Why should it matter which system you play on? PS3, PS4, PC…unless their all on different servers then there’s no excuse for locking the player to a single platform in a MULTI-PLATFORM GAME. I’ll never understand this.
