Final Fantasy XIV Launch Woes Continue, More Servers Coming Soon

Final Fantasy XIV may have been remade and relaunched as A Realm Reborn, but many who suffered through the original 2010 incarnation of the Square Enix MMORPG (which sits pretty at a 49 score on Metacritic) are suffering all over again. The gates to the kingdom of Eorzea opened on Tuesday, but overloaded servers and instability — and the ensuing emergency restrictions put in place by the dev team — have locked out tens of thousands of paying customers for nearly the entire week. Finally, Square Enix says relief is on the way this week in the form of additional servers.

It’s a shame, really. Based on the handful of reviews that have been published by journalists who were actually able to play it before the rush, A Realm Reborn is a fantastic MMORPG that more than makes up for FFXIV’s initial debacle of a release three years ago. To be fair, MMORPG launches are always a bit of a hot mess in the early days, but judging by the 218 rage-filled pages full of threads on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support forum, A Realm Reborn could set a new low.

In a post early this morning on the official Final Fantasy XIV forums, Director Naoki Yoshida apologized for the ongoing World login and character creation issues and promised relief is on the way.

“We thank our fans again for the overwhelming support you have shown us over the past week,” Yoshida stated. “The response to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has well exceeded our expectations, and unfortunately resulted in our inability to provide the service which we originally intended. We humbly ask for your continued patience as we work to alleviate the issues as we truly appreciate all of our fans. We are very sorry for the frustration that has resulted from these problems.”

Officially, new servers will be opened starting on Wednesday, September 4. Yoshida said he believes these additions will fix the problems, but warned that a second rush to log in on Wednesday will most likely create further congestion. To make up for the lost time, Square Enix is providing a seven-day extension to the FFXIV: A Realm Reborn free trial, details of which will be announced following the new servers launch on Wednesday.

This game is fail and the Second Coming on Tuesday/Wednesday will fail to but that won’t stop battered wives and enablers of the creepster Cult of Yoshi from spewing their usual flood of BS excuses. Cult Leader Yoshi is already trying to lower expectations by basically saying the congestion is not going to be fixed.

It’s typical cultist behavior, Yoshi gets all the glory for “saving” FF and none of the responsibility for screwing up the launch.

Good things happen = Yoshi is a Final Fantasy God
Bad things happen = Yoshi is just some guy on the dev team

The only thing worse than the launch is the cultish white knight can boy excuses

This is great and all, but it wont fix anything for the players who already have characters created on a server and cant log in. we need more room, not more servers. no one past lvl 30 is going to want to restart from scratch. They really need to increase the server capacities. i get stuck trying to log in for over an hour sometimes. yesterday it took almost 3! we just need more room!

It’s not just realm login and character creation issues. When they changed the FFXIV account management system many player accounts lost their 1.0 account status as registered FFXIV owners and when attempting to re-register their serial keys it says its already redeemed. Since tech support doesn’t answer phones, disconnects chat support requests, and replies to e-mail support with generic no-help responses, many of us are locked out from playing.

You people whining like babies about this launch obviously never played Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, Shadowbane, Age of Conan, or any other of the multitude of MMO’s with crap launches. Anarchy Online is still the worst MMO launch of all time, most players couldn’t even log in for the first MONTH.

I played many MMO’s all with bad launches but this is the worse so the dude who posted needs to stop being a fanboy. I played ff from the early days before the ff7 hype and I’m telling u without bias this is the worse MMO launch ever and is inexcusable.
7 days extra on free trial is a start but how about something ingame like an xp reward to catch up 2 people who haven’t logged out for the 7 days?
This is 2013 not 1999 when Everquest launched so I don’t see the relevance anyway also it’s not a release its a re-release and on top of that its not even squares first MMO so save the excuses for the people who get paid to make them. You don’t hear square saying well it’s an MMO happens deal with it and pointing at other who also had a terrible start saying well look its not just us cuz that is just stupid.
Like saying “I’m dumb but it’s ok cuz all these people are dumb to” it doesn’t change the fact your dumb now does it?

I’ve been in a total of 5 online game release’s: City of Heroes, WoW, Diablo 3, Original Guild Wars and Age of Conan. FFXIV will be the sixth and all 6 have one thing in common; NO RELEASE GOES FLAWLESSLY. WoW had the, “stuck on a gryphon,” bug. City of Heroes had powers that wouldn’t work and would actually crash the server! Diablo 3: Error 37 anyone and Original Guild Wars release had zoning issues. To tell the truth FFXIV only hiccup has been login and character creation issues; the rest of the game runs smoothly. The main thing I want to say though is that no release goes perfectly and all those raging need to learn that turning on an MMO is not as easy as turning on your toaster. Show some patience and please STFU.

This is probably the worst launch I’ve encountered in an MMO based solely on stability. Like Reign, I’ve seen a bunch of them.

That being said, I tend not to hold grudges when it comes to bad launches, cause at the end of the day, what I really care about is playing an awesome game. Hell, I bought the game when it first released, and have been waiting over a year for the release… so I personally am not going to let a week or two of difficulties bias my opinion.on whether I think this game is worth playing.

That being said, I’ve been getting my NA primetime play on EU servers, and playing late nights on the NA servers, and I have to say that this game is definitely 100x better than the original release. And when I have got the play time have been pleasantly surprised.

I do hope they sort out their problems soon so people can give the game its fair shake, but I also think that folks have the right to their opinion on whether the bad launch will be a deal breaker… for me I just assume I will forget about it in a month, but I wouldn’t blame anyone if they walked away because of this… although personally I hope not, cause so far I”ve been having a lot of fun when I’ve been able to play.

The most annoying thing about this server problem, is when I got to actually login to the game and play for about 4 hours, I was constantly messaged by RMT gil sellers and ran past afk players that didn’t move once in the 4 hours. I wasn’t done playing and suddenly there was a “problem with the server” and was kicked off and haven’t been able to login since… Why the f*** can those people stay logged in and where are the GMs removing the gil sellers and/or booting the afk ppl? I just wanna play! Lol. Secondly, when they add more servers, are they increasing the current ones’ size? I don’t wanna have to restart everything on another server with a new character….. Smh.

Free-to-play in six months. A WoW clone with an FF skin job won’t hold anyone’s attention (or subscription) for long. The combat is comically hyperkenetic, brainless button mashing of the lowest order – you’d think Cartoon Network was responsible. They followed up a massive fail with an even bigger fail.

I do have probelms loging in and there was a problem where I got disconnected once and could not get in for about 1.5 hours.

But I still would rate this game a 9 of 10. The game plays great and I find they Enjoinments are beautiful. The main story is great and the music is classic FF.

I would highly recommend this game for all FF fans. Just wait a few weeks and I am sure the login issues will be fixed. Patients.
