First Look at Groups in StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm

Today, Blizzard released a blog post explaining some details about the Groups feature in upcoming StarCraft 2 expansion, Heart of the Swarm.

Similar to the Clans feature which beta testers can already check out, Groups allows players to associate in large numbers via a designated chat channel, a News tab where stories can be posted, an Info tab where officers can post a brief description of the Group, and a Members roster. Players can only join one clan, but can join up to 20 groups. Further, a nearly unlimited number of players can join a Group — what Blizzard means by “nearly unlimited” is still unknown.

When you create a Group, you must select a category that best describes the type of Group you are creating: BarCraft, Strategy and Coaching, etc. Once the Group is created, others will then be able to search for the Group by name or browse through the Groups by category. Groups may also be public or private, requiring an invitation to join.

The Clans feature is intended to be oriented toward the game’s competitive aspect, whereas Groups are more casual.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Hell, it’s about time. We should have had clan support on Day 1; still, better late than never.
