Like a crooked and plain looking racehorse that bettors and trainers originally scoffed at, during the past four years Nvidia has blown past its competitors coursing with rich bloodlines and is currently dominating the field. Forbes business magazine has noticed this “breakneck, highly lucrative graphics-chip business”, and has thus named Nvidia “Company of the Year” for 2007.Originally used in the first Xbox, Nvidia GPUs are an integral part of the PS3 and as bandwidth becomes cheaper and omnipresent, the demand for PC graphics is only increasing – what with consumers appetite for more 3D power for their online applications as well as their games.

“The more content there is, the more visual interest there can be, the more processing horsepower people need,” said Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.

Up 57% from last year, Nvidia now claims 62% of the market for PC graphics cards according to Mercury Research and the company has increased its gross margin from 29% in 2004 to 46% currently. With the fiscal year ending in just a few weeks, Nvidia is expected to gross over $4 billion dollars and net over $900 million. After going public in 1999, shares in Nvidia stock have risen 21% and have edged out Apple over the same time frame.

This stellar rise to the top combined with quality products at decent prices, is what led Forbes to award the “Company of the Year” title to Nvidia.
