Frictional’s SOMA Just Got Creepier

Last week, the frighteners at Frictional Games began teasing a mystery project called SOMA. Today we have a slightly better idea what they’re working on.

Before we get to today’s video, let’s get you up to speed. Here’s the first file, “Vivarium,” Frictional revealed last week:

What the hell was that all about? Well, a vivarium is an enclosed area used to observe plant or animal life and conduct research, and according to ancient Vedic sanskrit, Soma is the name of a drink used in Hindu rituals that produced immortality. That’s all we knew going into today. Then came file number two, “Mockingbird:”

Of note: a brief description of the case file states “…intelligence first noted by Security Officer Douglas Strohmaier while investigating an automated distress signal coming from Construct Depot 11 Mockingbird had pried another UH3 open and removed its AI-unit made motions resembling those of eating, moving it close to its camera, and making sounds similar to smacking of the lips it introduced itself as Chief Engineer Adam Golaski.”

So it appears Frictional will, in part, be exploring the themes of brain emulation, the hypothetical process of transferring the mind/consciousness to a computer as a form of immortality. But evidently, the trapped and confused robot-people in SOMA want to eat AI-unit braaaaains. Creepy.

Stay tuned. There are six case files left on the official SOMA website.
