Friday Flame Wars – Duke Nukem Forever: Cool Throwback or Fail to the King?

Friday Flame Wars is a recurring feature on GameFront. We present a hot-button issue, and then encourage a no-holds-barred commenting battle royale healthy debate within our community.

It finally happened: Duke Nukem Forever is available for sale, for better or worse.

If you’re at all interested in video games, you’ve seen the coverage of the game. Lots of outlets like Destructoid, Ars Technica and IGN have panned the title, or at least called it mediocre. Fans continue to claim “parody,” even though calling Duke a parody doesn’t really make…sense…but whatever. For the part of our reviewer, Phil Owen, he actually kinda liked the game in a nostalgic shooter kind of way.

So we’re putting the question to you: Is Duke Nukem Forever an example of all that is wrong with humanity, video games and a universe in which bad things can happen to good people? Or is it just a throwback title to a simpler time that really shouldn’t be taken so damn seriously?

Is Duke Nukem Forever awful or awesome?

Played it for like an hour and was loving it. The game is not a “modern shooter”. Its just like a game you would see in the 90s.

Its not all about gameplay, its about all the little things that make it a Duke Nukem game.

My opinion:
Awesome.

The game is great for what it is. Duke was the first fps I ever played, for me its nostalgia.

Dated crap that was likely only released to support a ground up sequel. Shame that folks are willing to accept substandard games just because they are nostalgic.

Only joking – Duke rules. But someone should rip apart the game and combine it with Bulletstorm. Turn Duke into a REAL badass.

And for my final post – a serious note.
Duke Nukem Forever is entirely based on one liners, classic styles of gameplay, and raw amusement value. It is also about putting you in the shoes of someone who is so freakishly badass that they can beat a 20 foot tall boss by walking up and punching him in the nuts a few times. This game isn’t about gameplay, it’s about being someone every guy wants to be.

If you wait 15 years for a game, you get a game that was made 15 years ago, and if you expected anything else you’re an idiot. It’s like Spatterhouse, it was released as a favor to everybody who played Duke back in the day. You modern hurrfare kiddies need to go to bed. It’s not “substandard”. I wanted Duke, I got Duke. Next question.

Halo 2 with a Duke facelift does not make it a classic shooter idiots. That makes it a ty modern shooter. If you add in people tilting at angles around corridors and leaning up over obstacles and sliding into to hide behind cover then you get CoD.

Want classic shooter play Doom 1 or Quake. Don’t put those or even Duke 3D in the same category as this cause they are completely different in play style and approach.

Ok ok ok… I thought is was pretty good. Obviously not squad based shooter, but it personly did feel like a duke nukem sequel. I really think the best part about the game are the punch line jokes about 85% of the game is filled with. If you played this game just to beat it… well, you also missed the point. A lot of the game is the secret stuff, like the wussy halo power armor or the head of the borderlands guy under water. It’s stuff like that, that make this game awesome. It’s not super shiny and it’s not the game that will sell billions of copies. Hell, they new that when they released it as mature with nudity. It also doesn’t take it self that seriously so no matter how much anyone gripes about the game, it will still be awesome… because it’s Duke. Plain and simple. He’s a PC shooter icon and in my opinion, he’s still the icon he was before Forever came out.

I really love this game. Giving it 10/10. Much better than all the modern crap.
