FTL: The Clone Wars — Advanced Edition Update

The Kobayashi Maru of video games, FTL: Faster Than Light, is going to become even more difficult with the upcoming Advanced Edition and the arrival of a powerful new metallic alien race. But as developer Subset Games reveals in its latest update, Captains will have a useful tool in their battle against the Lanius — a Clone Bay.

In news that’s sure to make waves among FTL diehards, the Clone Bay will be an alternative to a ship’s Medbay. With it, crew members who die will be recreated as clones, at the cost of losing some of their established skills.

For a game noted for its permadeath challenge, this is quite the addition. As Subset Games explains:

The goal of the Clone Bay was to really disrupt the core way you play the game.  You’ll be able to send crew off into dangerous situations without fear  of death. Giant alien spiders will no longer be the terrifying, unstoppable force that you’re used to, since the system can simply revive your crew after the event. But, if a stray missile takes out the system mid-clone, you’ll find death can still be quite permanent. And you probably shouldn’t let your crew ponder too long on the fate of their previous iterations.

For those of you who might think a Clone Bay takes away from the punishing rougelike charm of FTL, Subset Games revealed it is also adding a new Hard mode. Because if any game needs to be more difficult, it’s FTL. Yowza.

As for a release date, Subset says it still isn’t ready to pin one on FTL: Advanced Edition just yet. We’ll keep you posted.

It is great to see a dev actually giving a free update, if this was EA it would cost half the price of the game for sure as DLC. This is the way updates should be done, not charging money for ing map packs.
