GamerDad Andrew Bub has announced his choice for the Family Game of 2007. His criteria is simple:
I’m not looking for excellence (Mario Galaxy) so much as I’m looking for impact. I’m looking for the game we’ll remember that year for.
And the winner hands down is Rock Band. This Harmonix title is three games in one; Karaoke Revolution, Guitar Hero and a more realistic version of Taiko Drum Master.
I’ve played thousands of games over my lifetime and the decade I’ve been writing about them and I’ve never seen a game accomplish what Rock Band does. It offers four different ways to play an incredible list of songs (most from the original artists), with more to download weekly (you’ve got to try “My Iron Lung” by Radiohead or “Roam” from the B-52’s).
I’ve got to agree with the man. Two of my kids are old enough to play so we almost always have a full band in the house even without guests. Just the original game is enough to challenge and entertain a group for days. When you add the DLC, you’ve got a game that is constantly new. The biggest problem with Rock Band is players fighting over the band line up, but musicians are supposed to be temperamental.

Being Elgish i will not play this game until those in the picture are about 13 years old.
Seriously, where’s this boat with the rock band packages on?? someone hijacked it?
In the mean time, i’ll strum on a cardboard box with elastic bands over the top, and bang a biscuit tin, and sing into a harir brush

I love Rock Band. I am not very good at the drums. My wife usually takes the drums and I’ll take either the guitar or bass and maybe someone else will sing…..maybe……singing is by far the least favorite in my house.
