Pilgrim’s Progress is an adventure role playing game based on the novel by John Bunyan. It also draws upon The Holy War, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, and The Holy Bible for inspiration, to fill in the details of the story.
The game world is a 3D rendered environment of all of the places described in parts one and two, and the pseudepigraphic part three. It uses effective lighting, sound effects and music to capture the essence of each place according to the description in the novel.
The player begins the game by playing Graceless in the City of Destruction, who leaves his wife and children behind, becoming Christian, and makes his journey to the Celestial City on Mt. Zion.
The player will be able to freely roam and explore the world, instead of using common video game tropes such as the “insurmountable waist high fence” and “locked door” to force the player into taking the path that the novel has already laid out. Instead, the player will be pushed or pulled in the direction of the story. For example, the Valley of Destruction has a number of towns, such as the Town of Stupidity or Carnal Policy. Instead of blocking these places off with mountain ranges or impassable rivers or streams, Christian will be motivated to make his way to the Wicket Gate to ease his ever-growing burden.
