GameStop CEO Says Either Xbox 720 OR Ps4 in 2012, Not Both

No one really knows for sure when the next generation of consoles will begin. All signs point to Wii U launching this fall (even if Nintendo still hasn’t confirmed it). But what about Xbox 720 (or whatever Durango will be called) and Playstation 4? My money is on next year for both, with 720 launching first (around or before E3) and PS4 during the holiday season. But then, I’m just a lowly writer. What do people in the gaming industry think? Well, GameStop CEO Paul Raines (if you can call GameStop part of the industry) claims that I’m wrong, that in fact we should expect a staggered release with each console getting its own debut year.

“The Wii U, we expect it at holiday,” Raines said to The Verge, confirming what previously leaked GameStop documents suggested. However, he claims he’s been hearing we shouldn’t expect both Sony and Microsoft to launch their consoles next year. “This week, I’m getting a lot of rumors that are very interesting about 2013,” he said. “We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We’re expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in ’14. These rumors change every week, but we’re hearing more about next year.”

I still think Xbox 720 comes out first, but I suppose I could see the consoles being staggered. They’re probably not going to be cheap, and the developers probably don’t want to force consumers to make a choice that could well kill their business. We’ll see, presumably next year.

I wouldnt be surprised if this year was the Wii U. I know alot of people will say “Nintendo has a lot of ground to make up”, I disagree. Nintendo has always paved their own way and the Wii U looks like it will continue to push the envelope of game interactivity.

I say next year will be the 720 for sure. However and I say this with no malice, I would consider anyone who buys a 720 at launch to be a blithering idiot. Microsoft has proven they care little about certain things like “working condition” and more about trying to push a product out the door as quickly as possible, even if it means paying someone off to look the other way. My evidence is the 360 launch console which was proven to have a 30-45% failure rate, much higher than the standard allowed 10% maximum.

Am I the only one that thinks Sony could actually wait til ’15 to release the PS4? In terms of hardware one could argue that the PS3 skipped a generation leaving Microsoft in its wake. With that said the PS3 launch could be considered a colossal failure which took Sony 3-4 years to recover from. A year after its release your average gamer was going “Ok, the PS3 still costs 6-7 hundred bucks, I dont like their exclusive library, GoW 3 and MGS4 are still 2-3 years off and now they just removed backwards compatibility. Remind me again why I should be buying this over a 360? “. If the PS4 launch ends up being just as bad as the PS3, then I dont think Sony can afford to try to find the surface let alone keep their head above it. Once the 720 is given an official release date you know the PS3 is going to get another price drop. The PS3 will take a resounding lead over the 360 in sales, and could easily dominate the 720 in its first year of life. I say give it 18 months which will give your new technology a chance to simmer which means you wont have to charge another 700 bucks for your console.

But this is just my opinion.
