GameStop Dishing Out Catwoman Codes with Arkham City Used Sales

This just in: You DON’T have to buy a new copy of Batman: Arkham City new to get the four levels of Catwoman content contained within. GameStop will give it to you free.

We found out earlier this week that Warner Bros. and Rocksteady were locking the Catwoman playable content behind a one-time “VIP code” that comes in the new version of the game — like basically everyone everywhere is doing in order to fight off used game sales. You can get at the Catwoman content without the code, but it’ll cost you $10 on the platform of your choice.

But now it turns out GameStop will be distributing VIP codes for free with used copies of Arkham City, according to a leaked internal memo obtained by Kotaku. GameStop had an earlier deal with Warner Bros. for similar codes for Mortal Kombat, which seems to suggest the two companies have some kind of money-changing-hands type deal going, I suspect. Codes like these are meant to weaken losses due to resales, but GameStop’s business is mostly resale — so it seems a bit counter-intuitive. I bet GameStop paid for the privilege of being your free code distributor; or maybe it was to make up for the horrific PR botch last time GameStop touched online codes when Deus Ex: Human Revolution was launched.

It means nothing to me . I’d rather pay full price. I believe in supporting the artists and programmers the game developers in general. I pay what I have to for the right to play.

Ok, I get that it’s possible but i’m getting the game new anyways but here’s what I want to know. When you say “new” copies of the game do you mean like “new” as in like in a certain month/time period. Like only if the copy is like one of the first copies? Or “new” as in I can just go to walmart and the get the new copy of the game and automatically have the code.

@Victor

The code comes in the game when you buy it new at retail. But it’s one-time use only, so if you sell your copy to GameStop, obviously, it doesn’t come with a code. The player who buys a used copy from GameStop won’t get a code, and therefore would have to pay $10 to get the Catwoman content for the game online. It’s to discourage people from buying used games and instead get them to buy new retail copies. GameStop is getting around that by selling the used copies and including codes of their own for the Catwoman content.

Ohhhhh, ok. That makes sense. So just as long as I get a “new” retail copy i’ll have the code. Which means I will have the code if I purchase it from walmart since they only sell new games! Or I can always get a new copy from gamestop. Thanks! Gamestop always knew their way to get people to buy used games lmao. Even with this tactic i’m still buying new :)
