We traded in a DSLite at GameStop for a new DSi. We got a $70 credit, but two hours later my daughter (who is 10 yrs. old) decided she was really attached to her DSLite and wanted it back. We still had the unopened DSi, so we called the store and they said we had to repurchase the DSLite for $109! So we basically are paying $109 for nothing. A ridiculous policy and horrible customer service.

I know people are not always happy with trade in credits. but its all based on popularity, age of the game, and ratings also how many we have on average company wide. i get the same trade credit as customers. i just traded Orange Box that i played once and got about $30. But everyone is in to make money. why would you be selling games to our store if u didnt want money. if u have a problem with an employee write down their name and call later to talk to the manager or customer service. I as an employee have even received poor service. I walked into the EBX in the same mall i worked at the gamestop. now i walked in with my nametag on, and their counter was 4 feet from the wall and only path ur able to walk in. and upstairs we greeted every customer even if we were busy ringing customers. i didnt know any of these employees so they wouldnt recognize me. i was not greeted or anything after being in the store for 15minutes. but if an employee was not polite or annoyed me i will not hesitate to call their dm. if ask for the DM's number u know ur problem will be solved. if they dont provide the number call another store. all the staff at the store i work at are very good except for one. but even the new ones know their stuff. atleast one good employee is always working

Let the buyer/trader beware! It may take patience and shopping around but the problem is many gamers are so ravenous about playing a new game they pre-order and pay full msrp for a game. It's really bizarre that gamefans wait in a line the night before to get their hands on systems and games when the price will drop within a short time of release. Personally I wait to see what the reviews are and for bugs that pop up in new systems. In conclusion:Don't complain if you get robbed for trade-ins at gamestop,Alternatives: sell or barter your games on craigslist or mod your systems, because for the price of one to two games you can download everything after that point.(And yes thanks to pirating eg. Music and Movie piracy Napster, Limewire, Torrents)the cost of games does go up but i didn't say it was a perfect world.) Video Games will be the next victim in the piracy war.

Editorials are "opinion pieces" Marv, they don't "have" to look at both sides. Also, for your information, a lot of GS stores in the area have stopped taking used games, and also, if you re-read the post, you will notice I never suggested using eBay, I used it as a horrible option.

The author of this article is not looking at it from more than one perspective. Lots of people collect games until they can't play all of them anymore. What do they do with these games? They can't really sell it for much. People like taking a few games that they don't play anymore and trade it in for a new one. I can trade in 5 old games for one new one, with far less hassle than having to try to sell it on ebay, ship the items, collect the money and then go to gamestop to buy it. Face it, if you're the type that would do something like that, you're not their target market, the trade-in option wasn't made for you. And most importantly, it's optional, so why are you complaining. If anything you should complain about the fact that no other store does this, and at a more fair value rate. But what is fair value rate anyways? As a company they risk not being able to sell an old game, or if the game has defects, and pay for the shelf space needed to store the game before it sells. You're also paying for convenience, the fact that you can trade in 5 games and get a new one with hardly any hassle. I and many other people like the way this system works.

Gamestop's success can only be attributed to people finding their business model sound. Even if you don't like it, you have to realize that it's a model that works, that many other people love, and it's here to stay.

Before I respond, I would like to let Rollett know that I was using an EXAMPLE not a FACT, and to add to it... I have never played Halo 3 nor do I intend to.

Mr. B - I rent more games than I buy because of the reasons you stated. I would never purchase a game, such as Two Worlds or Lair (please note these are EXAMPLES people)without first getting a wide variety of opinions on the games. To give you an example of games that I have recently purchased: BioShock, The Orange Box, and The Phantom Hourglass - to be honest with you I have no intention of ever returning BioShock because I plan on playing it again, and The Half Life games are a favorite of my boyfriend. The newest Link adventure will most likely never be returned as well because I am a huge Zelda fan.

What you have to understand is that I work in this industry and sometimes I have to purchase a game so that I can become more familiar with it. We don't always get review copies of games, and if I waited to rent a lot of the games instead, I would be on a long waiting list at my local Blockbuster. I live in a small town on the edge of a larger city, and the kids around here gobble up the games the moment Blockbuster gets them in, so you see, if I waited as you suggested on the majority of titles, they would be old news by the time I got to them. Now, that is from a work standpoint. From a personal standpoint, I have no qualms in the least about researching a game before I dole out the cash - I usually always wait. The last time I did not was for The Darkness, and I wish I had waited.

One thing I should have mentioned in my post was the fact that the two different GameStop stores in the town next to me quoted different trade-in prices on the same game. I do not know if that is because I spoke with a new employee who was unaware, or if prices vary per location - being corporate owned stores I would assume the prices would be the same. But that also happened to me on more than one occasion. Whatever the case may be, GameStop apparently has VERY loyal employees and from what I have gathered in the comments LOYAL customers too. Fine. Fantastic. Stupendous. I have no issue with that. Yes, you will find disgruntled employees at any store/eatery/mega mall/amusement park and most of the time you do not have to look too hard - and if none of you have had such bad experiences as I have at a GameStop that is great news and I sincerely hope you never do.

In closing, I want to draw attention to the EB Games that I have started to frequent in the last month. You may recall I mentioned the store in my post. I have only visited the store twice, and both times I have spent almost an hour there, not just looking at the games, but talking to the manager and employees as well. Those two occasions, were extremely pleasant experiences and no other GameStop/EB Games location will receive my business other than that one. Other than when the ex-store manager Niall was working at the one I used to frequent, this is the FIRST store that has greeted me the moment I walk in - no matter if they are slammed or not. They are not constantly on the phone with their buddies, they do not gather in packs at the back of the store and chat ignoring your pleas for help - on the contrary, they have yet to ignore a customer as far as I can tell, they are not rude to the poor soccer moms who have no clue about games, and they have gone out of their way each time to make us feel like we matter to them. I have not felt that way about a GameStop store in years. It had gotten to the point, where I would buy my games at Best Buy instead, because at least at BB, I EXPECTED to be treated like an inconvenience – I used to never feel that way at a GameStop, but in the past three years – I have felt insignificant to them. Thank the Gaming Gods that our Content Manager Ron told me about the EB Games store I now frequent. So if you still do not see the reasoning behind my feelings, you never will – but you know what? That is fine. No one has to agree with another’s opinion, and to those who have been civil in this discussion, you are proof that it is ok to disagree. Those who have resorted to chastising, name calling and profanity, well you know you are immature so we do not have to point that out to you. We should never have to edit a post for content, whether it is for or against the post.

Again, thanks for stopping by Gaming Today – we always appreciate the visit and enjoy interacting with you. :-)

I frankly don't understand all this vitriol. I just had a great conversation with my local guys at the nearby Gamestop. As usual they recognized me, greeted me and we talked games and the store itself.

I went in to buy Ratchet & Clank Future, they said they thought they were out and luckily after discussing where I could go to get it they remembered the days shipment and went back and found a copy for me. Nice, polite, congenial business transactions. No problem. They also know generally not to presell me because of this connection to the industry I have but we talked the crazy business the store is doing and how good it is to be a gamer this holiday season.

If you look hard enough you're even likely to find mean-spirited clerks at Disneyland.. which goes to say that for me at least I enjoy being a consumer in GS stores.

Stephany:

Just read this quote of yours:

"I trade in a game, which I finished in less than 20 hours. I paid 60.00 for it. I go back to the store and I receive a 20 spot. I basically paid 40.00 to rent a game for less than a day - even Blockbuster gives you more than a day to return something"

This is your fault, not GameStop's. The fact is you SHOULD'VE rented the game.

Thanks to games selling for $59.99 a piece nowadays, most people do some research before they shell out the money to actually buy it. Things like: Does this game have a lot of replay value? How long is it? Will it keep me entertained ect.

Also another point some people are missing, is the used games have a BETTER guarantee then the new ones. Even if the used one isn't as cheap as you'd like you have 7 days to get a full refund on it, even if you beat it and just didn't like it..it doesn't matter.

So how about instead of spending 40$ for a rental as you put it..wait a week or so for a used one and return it for a free rental? Or actually rent the game next time?

Or if your too impatient you can just keep throwing away your money I suppose...

Just read this quote of yours:

“I trade in a game, which I finished in less than 20 hours. I paid 60.00 for it. I go back to the store and I receive a 20 spot. I basically paid 40.00 to rent a game for less than a day – even Blockbuster gives you more than a day to return something”

This is your fault, not GameStop’s. The fact is you SHOULD’VE rented the game.

Even if the used one isn’t as cheap as you’d like you have 7 days to get a full refund on it, even if you beat it and just didn’t like it..it doesn’t matter.

So how about instead of spending 40$ for a rental as you put it..wait a week or so for a used one and return it for a free rental? Or actually rent the game next time?

Or if your too impatient you can just keep throwing away your money I suppose…

if your so passionate about corperate america and the "quality" of stores and their employees maybe you should go see a shrink or actually do something to better this crap but other than that this article is true and very well thought and screw you drones for your fake comments we see through you...

Edited for content

Seriously, folks. I am glad to see that this thread has generated so much spirited debate. However, I do ask that you try to at least keep the comments on the civil side of profane.

I guess I'm lucky. I've never had a problem at a GameStop except them not having the game I'm looking for. There are 3 in the Bronx I can choose from, 2 I've been to and the workers were great. I've also been to the one on 86th Street across the street from the Best Buy and never had a problem there either.

As someone else said, brand name sneakers cost about $100 bucks sometimes even $150 and it cose less than half that to make them. Yet not that many people complain.
