GameStop: Used Games Do So Totally Help The Industry!
Gamasutra has posted an article about the used games business that yields surprisingly interesting information from Tony Bartel, the President of GameStop. I say surprisingly because it contains actual substance, rather than what I expected, which is that Bartel would make Gamasutra stand in an excruciatingly slow line for an hour, which never makes sense because you can totally see three of him at the counter so why the hell haven’t they been able to ask their question yet, only to discover that Bartel hasn’t heard of Fez.
I kid, I kid.
But seriously, the whole article is worth checking out, but the quote from Bartel shows GameStop going on the offensive against an industry increasingly of the opinion that used games hurt the business. In response to charges that used game sales cause a decline in first buyer sales, he said:
“We are giving them 17 percent toward the purchase of their games today. We have that form of unfunded discount that we give to the publishers.”
What do you think, Game Fronters? I’m personally on team used games.
