GameStop Wants to Offer Customers “Exclusive” Gameplay
GameStop is working with publishers to give its customers unique gameplay content for shopping at its stores.
These efforts were revealed by recent reports from R.W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian, a frequent source of inside information pertaining to the game industry. According to Sebastian, the retailer may already be finding willing partners to help it in its endeavors.
“[GameStop] indicated that software publishers are more enthusiastic about partnering with it,” he said, writing in a note to investors. “For example, by offering exclusive content on each major game release, and longer term, future models may include GameStop offering exclusive gameplay.”
This plan was then confirmed by GameStop spokesperson Jackie Smith who, speaking in an interview, affirmed that the retailer is working to “build in a longer lead time” and that it’s working with publishers “to get both physical and digital exclusives” for its shoppers.
GameStop, of course, already features exclusive DLC content as a selling point for pre-orders and to help keep gamers shopping beneath its roof. That being the case, most of the retailer’s current offerings tend to fall on the negligible side of things. If the company is able to set up the publisher partnerships being suggested however, it could see a shift in its offerings that could give it a potential edge over its competitors.
