GameTap to Lose Around 70 Games on December 11

sim-tunes.jpgIn an awkward series of events, GameTap is going to lose roughly 70 games from its catalog come December 11. This comes not too long after GameTap celebrated hitting the 1,000 games mark – meaning they’ll, embarrassingly enough, be enough yanked under that mark when EA, Atari and others break their ties with the download service.

This came to light by way of a forum post on the official GameTap forums when an inquisitive member wondered why certain games he was looking at said they were to be removed from the catalog on December 11.

According to GameTap’s editorial director, Doug Perry, games on GameTap aren’t permanently a part of the catalog; games have been removed in the past, but they most likely weren’t noticed since it wasn’t done in such a large fashion.

I must say, I’m fairly disappointed to find out that certain games I enjoy having access to might no longer be available if there’s some dispute over money or a contract expiring. (There are no specific details on why EA, Atari and company are parting ways with GameTap.) There’s currently an unofficial list of games that will be removed, most of which you could call edutainment, but there’s also Tetris, Sim City, Ultima I – VI, Wing Commander and, perhaps most upsettingly, SimTunes.

Atari is going down the toilet so I’m not surprised by them removing games, but wow EA sure are dicks.
