Gaming Vets Form Studio, Unveil The Long Dark
Remember this name: The Long Dark. Its the first project from Hinterland Studio, the new outfit formed by a roster of industry veterans from the likes of BioWare, Riot Games, Relic Entertainment, and Volition, and it sounds like a doozy. It’s described as an episodic, story-driven, first-person “post-disaster survival simulation” and it’s being written by God of War scribe Marianne Krawczyk.
In a press release, founder and creative director Raphael van Lierop (Dawn of War, Company of Heroes) announced the formation of Hinterland Studio and laid out the storyline for The Long Dark, which takes place in the aftermath of a geomagnetic super storm that lays waste to North America’s infrastructure:
“In the first season of this episodic series, players experience this grim new reality through the eyes of bush pilot William Mackenzie, isolated with other survivors in the Northern wilderness as a result of the event. Gameplay emphasizes exploration to gather resources and knowledge about the world, while mastering a deep survival simulation to overcome the myriad natural and man-made hazards of the new frontier. Players will also face difficult moral choices that will affect the outcome of gameplay, story, and ultimately, the course of humanity’s recovery.”
DayZ opened my eyes to just how fun (and terrifying) survival sims can be. Wrap a powerful storyline around the core survival sim experience and Hinterland could be on to something special.
Hinterland is just getting started on The Long Dark, so we don’t have any other details (platforms, release date) just yet. We should learn more starting on September 16. That’s when Hinterland plans to launch the Kickstarter campaign for The Long Dark. We’ll keep you posted.
