Garry’s Mod Pirate Trap

Garry Newman, creator of the popular source engine mod “Garry’s Mod,” recently tweeted a question to his fans:

Anyone unable to shade polygon normals?

And so the trap was set. Newman deliberately introduced an error in his eponymous mod that would only affect users who pirated GMod. The error message?

Engine Error:Unable to shade polygon normals(#################)

That numerical sequence at the end of the message is the user’s SteamID, a unique code used to identify a Steam account.

When users began posting about the error message on the GMod forums, the banhammer was dropped: first on forum accounts, then on the Steam accounts of the pirates foolish enough to unknowingly post their SteamIDs. Those users who didn’t want to dish out the $9.99 for GMod will find themselves unable to play.
