Gas Powered Games Laying Off Developers, Had to ‘Slim WAY Down’

Gas Powered Games is having some serious money troubles, it seems, as the developer has laid off nearly its entire staff, safe its CEO and one or two other employees, according to reports.

Kotaku has the story, in which Gas Powered’s CEO, Chris Taylor, has confirmed that layoffs are happening. Taylor also has told Gamasutra that “The studio is still operating, but we had to slim WAY down to conserve cash reserves.”

You might have heard Gas Powered’s name pop up in the news lately — the developer behind games such as Dungeon Siege (Taylor also is the creator of Total Annihilation) — because it just kicked off a Kickstarter campaign earlier this week. That project is meant to fund its new game, Wildman, to which backers have already pledged more than $170,000 — but which has a goal of $1.1 million.

Wildman sounds like an intriguing project, but with the financial dire straits implied by the layoffs, one must assume it will never see the light of day. There’s no update on the Kickstarter page as yet, but Taylor said he is working on getting one there for the attention of backers. At the moment, it’s not clear what the future holds for Gas Powered Games or Wildman.

We’ll keep an eye on the situation and update as more news comes in.
