GDC 08: LucasArts Confirms Production of New Indiana Jones Game

indiana jones

According to LucasArts, the Indiana Jones game that they had planned for two years was sidelined at one point because of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed needed their full attention. Good news though for gamers wanting to get in on some more Indy action, LucasArts confirmed at GDC 08 that they have now started production on the game – but it will not be out this year. Please make a mental note gamers that this is NOT the LEGO: Indiana Jones title – just wanted to clarify that before someone got confused. Hey, it happens.

According to NaturalMotion’s  CEO Torsten Reil, the new Indiana Jones title will be using NaturalMotion’s “euphoria” technology to “handle complex CPU-based dynamic animation trickery”. Animations are not pre-rendered and instead occur in tune with “what the action is telling the game engine.”

Sounds like a more interactive experience than the previous installments in the franchise, and for those of you wanting a more authentic version of our favorite Archeologist, unlike the LEGO version – this one may actually include Nazis. Not that LucasArts has said anything about the content of the game, but we can pretty much bet the farm that it will be far from “good, clean and wholesome” like the LEGO games. Hopefully soon we will have more details on what consoles it will be released for and what adventures will be included within the storyline.

As excited as I am for the Force: Unleashed, I’m anxious to see what LucasArts can do with the new Indiana Jones game since they’ll probably get a lot of feedback when Force: Unleashed is released that they can then use to make Indiana Jones better with their new technology.

I was wondering what had become of the DMM/euphoria-based Indiana Jones. Too bad LucasArts won’t be able to co-release it with the new Indiana Jones movies coming out this summer. I’m sure that is what they originally wanted to do.

But who in the world is “LucasArts CEO Tornsten Reil?” Is he the one stepping in to replace Jim Ward? This is the first time I’ve encountered this name.

Hey Stephany,
It’s Torsten Reil, not Tornsten. Also Torsten Reil is the CEO of NaturalMotion, not LucasArts.
