GDC 2012 – Notch Hints There Is A Still-Undiscovered Secret In Minecraft

During the same ‘fireside chat in which he confirmed that success hasn’t stopped him from keeping it real, Notch hinted while he and Chris Hecker were discussing Minecraft that the game still contains an undiscovered secret waiting for players to discover. What that secret is he didn’t say, though the hint happened while they were discussing how essentially the Minecraft wiki is for getting through the game. It’s possible this means the secret might not really be all that discoverable, and that perhaps people ought to scour the existing resources for information, but this is base speculation.

Notch also proved once again that he’s a super awesome person when the discussion turned to the game’s character models. He said that though they considered providing a female playable character model, their attempts to do so within Minecraft’s blocky aesthetic failed. “It ends up being extremely sexist,” Notch said, which is why they ultimately scrapped the attempt. Notch also said he regretted the creation of half blocks, and failure to include multiplayer earlier in development, but the open discussion of sexism in the gaming world is by far the most important take away.

Minecraft has sold 5.3 million copies to date.
