GDC 2012: Paradox Reveals 3 New Games

Today at GDC, Paradox revealed their next 3 games, shortly thereafter posting the news to their official site. Each will be available exclusive for PC and Mac (sorry, console owners), and are due for release over the next year. They are:

* Red Frontier. A competitive RTS set sometime in the future, in space. Players choose different sci fi archetypes as characters and with the help of NPCs and teammaters wage war and gain control of valuable resources. Totally nothing like Starcraft, as you’ll see from the trailer. Cough.

* The Showdown Effect. This one comes courtesy of Arrowhead Game Studios, makers of Magicka. Set in Neo Tokyo – no relationship to Akira, probably – in the far off future year 2027, it’s a 2.5D action multiplayer game. It’s working title was “Project JFK,” which has nothing to do with the goofy tone that mocks 80s action movie cliches and cyberpunk conventions with glee.

Finally, there’s my personal favorite, Dungeonland, by Brazil’s Critical Studio. A witty-sounding take on old school role playing games and sims like Roller Coaster Tycoon, up to 4 players can play. 3 players pick among several RPG archetypes like “Mage” and “warrior”, while the 4th gets to be the dungeon master. The game takes place in a fantasy-themed amusement park full of traps and dangers and other goodness.
