GDC11: Steam Coming to TVs

Valve announced a new mode for Steam today at GDC 2011 in San Francisco: “Big Picture” mode, which will enable players to access their Steam accounts and play Steam games on their TVs and other screens.

Unfortunately, the press release we received doesn’t really detail how one will be able to play Steam games on a TV set — but it’ll likely has something to do with the partnership between Steam and Playstation to allow PS3 and PC players to enter into Portal 2 co-op games and share mods. We already know Portal 2 will give players access to their Steam accounts and friends’ list through their Playstations, so it’s not too much of a stretch to think there might be some for the PS3 to stream or download more Steam features using its Wi-Fi connection.

The other possibility is a dedicated Steam console, perhaps similar to the one offered by OnLive that lets players stream games from the on-demand PC gaming service to their TVs.

We’ll let you know when we find out more.
