Gearbox Trademarks 'Z-Day' – New Zombie Game in the Works?
Case in point: It appears that Gearbox Software, developers of Borderlands, has trademarked the name “Z-Day.” The trademark, filed on May 21, of this year, gives Gearbox the rights to use the name for, “Computer game software for personal computers and home video game consoles; Motion picture films about action and adventure.”
Gearbox hasn’t announced anything, but they did announce on Twitter that they were looking for focus testers for an “unreleased game.” Maybe we’ll see a combination zombie shooter / motion picture, something I could really be interested in.
Interestingly, there is a project already in development called ZDay, and it’s not made by Gearbox.
It’s a Multiplayer Online 3D FPS Zombie Survival game currently under development by Arrowhead Games. No word from Gearbox on this, but the fact that they were able to register the trademark is interesting.
We’ll have to wait and see what comes out of this one. It certainly appears that Gearbox has some intention of using the name, but what effect this might have on the Arrowhead Games project is unknown right now.
Perusing the forums of the official Arrowhead Games ZDay site turns up a thread (registration is required) where the developers and community are discussing this very topic. In a very classy post, developer chrisg says in part, “I think what counts is the game not the name, if Gearbox does it right then good on them. They have the backing and potential to make a game far better than we can. Hopefully they’ll make the game that we always wanted to play.”
Hard to say when we’ll hear more on Gearbox’s intentions for the name, but until then, you can check out the trademark info here.
