Gears of War 3 Delayed to Fall 2011

Remember when the whole internet was in a state because Cliff Bleszinski was going to announce the launch date of Gears of War 3 on Jimmy Fallon’s national TV show?

Back then, Cliffy said Gears 3 would land in stores on April 8, 2011. Microsoft then said it would actually be 3 prior to that on April 5th. Now, they’ve shifted date again, saying that the game has been moved to a Fall 2011 release.

In a statement accompanying this news, Microsoft says,

Gears of War 3 promises to be the biggest entertainment launch of 2011. The teams at Microsoft Game Studios and Epic Games have done great work thus far readying the title for release in the Spring of 2011. However, we’ve elected to move the launch of Gears of War 3 until Fall 2011 to make it the marquee title for the holiday season.

While they don’t go into the reasons behind this shift, I would guess that the release of Bulletstorm in March could be part of it. Probably, MS just needed to firm up their Fall / Holiday 2011 lineup, and knew that Gears 3 was an instant way to do that.
