Gears of War 3 Has Mutators in Singleplayer and Multiplayer
Fans of Unreal Tournament might remember “mutators,” level customizations that increased player speed or lowered gravity, among many other effects. In the name of more player-centric “Sandbox”-type play, Epic has added mutators to Gears of War 3. The manner in which they are unlocked is likely to vary, but in addition to multiplayer mutators, the use of mutators in singleplayer has now been confirmed.
In an e-mail follow-up to our video interview, Gears Executive Producer Rod Fergusson described these exciting, game-changing options “We provided unlockable mutators so players can customize the play experience. We have mutators that make the game harder (like removing all the ammo pickups), easier and just plain silly.”
Specific details on the number of mutators or the range of their effects has not been forthcoming, but they sound like a fun way to lengthen the lifespan of the game, especially by applying them to Gears 3′s score-battling Arcade Co-op mode, which is covered in more detail in our co-op guide.
