Gears of War 3 Preview: Adam Fenix Is Alive
Marcus Fenix’s father, Dr. Adam Fenix, is a powerful but little-seen presence in the Gears of War series. During his career as a weapons designer, he was responsible for such fan favorites as the Chainsaw Lancer and the Hammer of Dawn. Before the events of Gears of War 1, Marcus disobeys orders in a failed attempt to save his father from a Locust attack, earning himself a jail sentence in the process. Freed from prison in the first level of the first game, Marcus later returns to the Fenix mansion, fighting up its palatial steps in one of the title’s most compelling sequences.
Dr. Adam Fenix, it turns out, is far from dead. In our hands-on look at the first act Gears of War 3′s singleplayer campaign, I was treated to the sight of Marcus Fenix watching a video-recorded distress call sent by his father and delivered by the untrustworthy Chairman Prescott. Looking like an older Marcus Fenix (that is to say, a pro wrestler with a grey buzz cut and small rimless glasses), the good Dr. suggested that he had hit upon a solution to humanity’s Lambent problem. All that remained was for Marcus to link up with his long-lost father and save the world. Sounds like the plot of a video game!
Epic and Microsoft’s recent Gears of War 3 Preview also yielded a wealth of information about the game’s Easter Eggs, the ugly 3D, the difficulty level adjustments, the new co-op features, and the intriguing campaign “mutators.” Our Rod Fergusson Video Interview has more intriguing tidbits, though he was very cagey on the subject of Dr. Adam Fenix.
