Gears of War DLC Won’t Be About Delta Squad
Cliff Bleszinski and the team over at Epic Games doesn’t intend to be finished with the Gears of War franchise anytime soon, even though the trilogy capper Gears of War 3 is the end of the current story arc.
According to a story from The Escapist, the door isn’t closed on future Gears of War offerings, but first: the inevitable DLC. As with Gears of War 2, it seems Epic is thinking more than just additional multiplayer maps, but if there’s story DLC, it won’t be about main characters Marcus Fenix and his squad, Dom, Baird and Cole.
“I believe that DLC should be unique and cool, like Lost and the Damned, Gay Tony, Mad Moxie’s Underdome Riot,” he said. “DLC’s the place where you play and have fun. So that’s one thing that’s an indication of where things may be going in the future.”
As I played through the campaign for my Gears 3 review, I kind of figured that Epic might use DLC to tell a few side stories that concern other characters. There are plenty of splits in which Marcus or others order one another to split up and head out to accomplish other tasks. Seems like there’s some ample room to explore the actions of characters like Jace and Sam, although from Cliff’s comments, I have a feeling that the DLC won’t be taking that form.
Beyond DLC, Bleszinski seems pretty forceful: the trilogy and its story ending does not mean the end of Gears of War, the series. Given the critical reception and the likely sales numbers of Gears of War 3, I highly doubt the end of the series is coming anytime soon.
