Gears of War PC Has a Small, Fixable Issue

If you picked up Gears of War for the PC this week and tried to go online with it, you should have been prompted for a title update. But due to a small problem, you’re probably stuck in a cycle of downloading the update and never quite installing it. Luckily, a fairly easy fix is available; you’ll simply quit after downloading the update, and the update will be fully installed next time you start the game up.

Here are the exact instructions, courtesy of Gamerscore Blog:

  1.  Start “Gears of War” for Windows (from Start Menu)
  2.  Once the game starts, press the “Home” key to open the Game for Windows — LIVE Guide
  3.  Sign-in using an existing Xbox LIVE account, or create a new Games for Windows — LIVE account (this will redirect you to a browser window, if you choose to create an account)
  4.  Once signed into LIVE, the user will be prompted to update the Games for Windows — LIVE version on their machine. Select the “Yes, Update Now” option
  5.  Wait for the opening cinematic with the Epic Logo and the Microsoft Games Studio splash screen to play
  6.  Once on the main Title Screen, press “Enter” to go to the Main Menu
  7.  On the Main Menu, quit out of the game
  8.  Once you quit out of the game, the Games for Windows — LIVE System Update will kick off. Wait for that install to complete.
  9.  Once that is complete, start the game again. You will have to re-login to Games for Windows – LIVE again

Microsoft is currently at work on a new update that will rectify the problem, but this simple fix should cure the problem with minimal effort.

we need a patch out to fix the stuttering not a patch for that minor issue,i paid £30 for this game and at the moment its unplayable due to this stuttering business
why release a game on pc like that knowing they’ll be issues that you’ll have to fix later on(£30) is a rip off especially as i could have waited like 2 months til issues was sorted, but stupid me thought nah microsoft wont make a blunder, ooopsss im wrong again, dam epic an dam microsoft!

On November 12, 2007 at 11:42 am

I was thinking of picking this game up today but since there’s so many issues with it, i don’t think i will. Thanks to everyone who let me know how crap Epic are.

On November 13, 2007 at 2:06 pm

I have a Q6600 Quad cpu an 8800GTS 320mb along with 2gb of ddr2 ram all running on an Asus P5n32E-sli mobo and i also get the stuttering problem. It’s not constant but it do’s it quite often and is really annoying. Considering the spec of my pc it’s also very dissappointing that the game is not uber smooth. I have not yet experianced the update problem myself but it all points to some shoddy work by both Microsoft and Epic. Sorted asap plz! To anybody put off buying this game given the issues it really is an excellent game and worth the £26.

On November 14, 2007 at 12:39 am

I’ve had no issues with this game. I’m running Vista 64-bit. I mean, I’m using HD2900XT 1gb crossfire, so no suprise average performance is not an issue, but I haven’t had any crashes or stuttering or anything.

On November 14, 2007 at 4:17 am

well johnny lol….lucky u most forums i’ve read on a lot of peeps have the same problem….its not the update thats the problem for me its that stuttering….nor have i crashed ……..i completed this game in hardcore on 360…good game but microsoft certainly made a blunder WITH THE PC VERSION, 800×600 everything on max is fine to me but the stuttering is’nt….SORT IT MICROSOFT…U CONNING W***ERS

On November 14, 2007 at 11:20 am

same problem with stutters like made and im running 2 7950gx2s in sli with 4gb ram…ill stick with the 360 version

On November 14, 2007 at 4:59 pm

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\Startup.exe

look for this in windows if the nine step thing is to hard. should work fine then.

On November 14, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Man, you guys are lucky.
I start the game and after the short movies from the creators, I hit the menu and lag heaven starts there! It takes 5 seconds for my mouse movement to even register. Never, ever hava I had a problem with recent games on my machine.

Got a dual core 3gh system with 3G ram and a nvidia 7950 GT (512mb) and it is updated (before you ask) with XP Pro SP2 running.
I should sue their butts of because they just made me waste 4 hours trying to fix the bloody thing. (never my the 50€ i paid for the game)

So i put it away for two weeks (fat chance getting my money back) and try again. But it will be a long time before I get fooled again by those wankers/bastards at MS!

So, that took care of some steam

On November 15, 2007 at 12:03 am

Yeah good thing the stuttering is a common issue, that means they’ll be working on it hopefully soon. I just bought a new set up, quad core 6600 cpu, 8800 gts 320, and 4gigs of ddr2 ram. Plays great for the most part(60fps almost always) but there’s always so much stuttering and glitching its’ really annoying. It had me worried it was my computer for a minute..

On November 15, 2007 at 12:09 am

Hey everyone. I was just wondering if anyone else was having problems with Gears. I had some issues with the game completely cutting off the connection to my monitor, but fixed that problem with system updates. I was maybe five checkpoints in and the game encountered and error and closed. Now, I can’t even get to my main menu before the game encounters a problem. If anyone could maybe help me out on this it would be much appreciated. Maybe it’s something I’m doing wrong, I’m not really sure. But if anyone has any suggestions e-mail me at Thanks a ton.

On November 15, 2007 at 4:20 am

haha cody thats a wicked setup…..its due to there programming not ur setup lol
even mines near good enough!

On November 15, 2007 at 7:54 am

I’ve installed it, but it will not run. I get past the 2 splash screen, to the menu, then within 15 seconds of getting there, the program crashes out and ends. I’ve not even been able to see any of the game!!!

I have a quad Q6600, with 4GB ram, Vista 64bit, and an 8800GT with 512MB. I’ve even tried the Beta drives on the Nvidia site…..are there any patches for this game?

On November 15, 2007 at 8:40 am

We all have issues with this pre-alpha crap game. The retards @Epic are referencing here for a driver that isn’t anymore available at At the moment the thread about the hardware issues @Epic’s forum is about 51!!!! pages long. No one can say that epic haven’t knew the state of their “product” as they release to the public. This is another complete pre-christmas rip-off.

Lets buy games that are running, crysis for example

On November 15, 2007 at 10:36 am

game runs fine now on my Win xp AMD dual core 4800xp, 7950gx2 1gb and 4gb ram..downloaded the latest chipset drivers for the main board and helped alot..

On November 15, 2007 at 7:50 pm

Ya huge rip off, yet again from microcrap. This is the 3rd game i’ve bought from them, so far they are 0 for 3. Don’t think ill be trying again after this one. I’m getting the EXACT same problem as Doodle. Havn’t even been able to enter the game at all yet… At least someone else other than me is having that exact problem, makes it more likly Epic/MS knows about it. Not that they care, if they did, theres no way this game would be out cause its DEFINATLY not rdy.. Well 3 strikes for MS, no more chances, ever..

On November 16, 2007 at 7:07 am

I’ve just complained to microsoft about this game lol in annoying waiting in a que for 20mins just to be told its a common problem “d’oh” my exact words was “if microsoft knew theyre was problems why the hell did they release this game with known bugs” “im very sorry mr smith” he said if we could just wait a week longer,i said that is no good my this time a was pissed a he got it!lol

means my video card crashed and the fan of the video card

My tale goes from bad to worse…I’m not only hacked off at Microsoft but I’m now even more hacked off at ASUS!!!

Since GOW was always crashing out at the menu and I had the latest graphics driver for my 8800GT, I thought I would update the BIOS on my mother board, an ASUS P5K-E WiFi. So I used their quality tool ASUS Updater from within Windows to upgrade the bios, it first cleared the bios, and then failed to download the new one. I now have a board with no bios at all! £100 board FCUK’ed! If this damn game had worked I would never have tried it!

On November 17, 2007 at 9:53 am

Hi Just to say im running a X1950 pro 512meg, Dual core athlon 5600 vista 64bit, 2gig ddr ram and its so jirky the 360 version was sweet. Need a patch quick.

I know it’s a bit late but when you use the Asus update utility it is best to download the new bios to your desktop then back up your current bios to a folder then use the update utility to update your bios. Doing it directly from the net is a recipe for disaster as you have found out :( unlucky! There is maybe a way out as im sure that board has a dual bios setup. Check the manual to see if it do’s. As suggested above take out the cmos battery of your motherboard and see if that resets the bios back to to basic. If not you can try jumping the cmos with a couple of screwdrivers but its likely the bios is fubar tbh. If you can supply more details then maybe i can help further.

On November 17, 2007 at 4:48 pm

It’s running fine on my system.

Pentium 4 @ 4.2ghz
X1900XTX 512mb
Vista Ultimate 32bit

On November 17, 2007 at 4:52 pm

I didn’t have the patience to wait for eBuyer to respond to my query about returning the board, and I couldn’t get the ASUS help desk on a SAturday, so I went round the local PC shop and bougt a new board, as I couldn’t bare the thought for a few weeks without the board until I got it sent off and replcaced/fixed. So I bought the ASUS P5K Premium today and I’m in the middle of setting it up. I’ll get the other board fixed via ASUS or replaced from eBuyer, and then sell it on eBay as the P5K-E WiFi was a great board and will sell no probs (Drop me an email if anyone wants to make me an offer)

The first thing I did with the new board was use the BIOS bases F2 ASUS AWARD Flash utility and brought the new board up to the right bios….worked a treat…I’ll not be going near it again though….once bitten….

As I’ve now build the new board, I have no way of testing the old bord as I’m not stripping it down again to get the CPU and memory….I’ll need to go with the replacement route unless that doesn’t work….

Ian :???:

Are you experiencing laggspikes every like 20 sec after 3-4 minutes into the games? It’s probably cause of Punkbuster, it checks ur computer every 20 sec. Uninstall it and try again. (uninstall like any other program).

On November 18, 2007 at 5:30 pm

I bought the game as soon as it came out, looks top notch except windows criticly errors after about 2 minutes of playing the game, right where you pick up your first set or grenades,
I’m running an AMD 6000 dualcore socket am2, 3 gig ram, x2 geforce 8800gtx a physics card and a beasty 1200 watt psu all slapped on a asus crosshair motherboard, to top it off its all watercooled, must be windows xp letting it donw. i’m not buying vista just to see if it works tho!!! lets see if this game can fly instead!!!

On November 18, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Mmmm. I’m a bit suious about your rig G4v1nnnn. Mainly because of the simple fact that it would be pretty mad choice to build a water cooled gaming rig with dual 8800s and put a dualcore AMD 6000 in it when you can get the far more powerful and more energy efficient Quad Core Q6600 for just a little more.

Money obviously isn’t a problem because you will have spent well over $300 on a completely unnecessary 1200w PSU.

Even the dual core E6700 or E6600s are a far better choice than the AMD. You can overclock the nuts out of the Core2Duos but you can get almost nothing from the AMD because its already pushed so much. You either just invented your spec or you made an appalling choice of parts when you built it.

On November 18, 2007 at 7:17 pm

LOL you people make me laugh, your slagging off ms when the very computer system your writing this slag off is on a ms machine

im using a dual core, 2gb ddr2, GeForce 8500 LE and i havn’t had any problems
PLUS im using a downloaded version not even paid for. Maybe the american release works without glitches? and the uk version doesn’t?
peaace out

On November 18, 2007 at 11:56 pm

wizard, you’re a
peace out

On November 19, 2007 at 8:36 am

I’m stunned! are taking the card back! I was expecting them to send me on my way to ASUS to replace it. Full marks to eBuyer for honouring this one! (Now I’ll chance my arm further and see if they will just refund me instead of replacing it as I bought the P5K Premium on Saturday and it’s working a treat now!)

I’ve not tried GOW again, but Crysis just blows you away with the graphics! Check it out, escpecially the water in daylight!

I must say that I’m sure glad I didn’t acquire my copy through the ‘regular means’…i.e. paying for it. The quality of this release reminds me of the Starlancer  days. A great game developed by MS and unfortunately full of bugs  …and no patch was ever released  . All I can say is ‘Caveat emptor’.

I was slagging the game off not anyones rig so i dont expect the same done to mine, as you should know building a pc is a continual process, hey cheers for the info tho i’ll be sure to ugrade again, i’ve yet to try quad core, my psu only cost £80 by the way!

On November 19, 2007 at 5:21 pm

“my psu only cost £80 by the way!”

Eh? Where on earth did you get a 1200w PSU for £80?

My 620w Enermax Liberty cost me nearly £100.

On November 19, 2007 at 6:21 pm

1200W would it not be cheaper to buy a case that takes two power supplies and putting in two 600Watt ones?

On November 19, 2007 at 6:46 pm

Ian said: “1200W would it not be cheaper to buy a case that takes two power supplies and putting in two 600Watt ones?”

Thats what I’m going to do if I ever need more power. Luckily I’ve got a huge CoolerMaster Stacker 810 so I can stick another PSU in the bottom at some point.

The new Antec P190 case actually comes with 650w and 550w PSUs pre fitted which is pretty cool.

This will fix the stuttering problem:

Go to the following directory :
\Gears of War for Windows\WarGame\Config\

Use a text-based editor to edit the following file:

Change the following line:
OnlyStreamInTextures=FALSE to OnlyStreamInTextures=TRUE

This will fix the stuttering problem.

if you dont know search these files and erase them:

hey Grimm

looked promising buthen after 5 mins she crashed again…..leaving me to send the 500th error report to microsoft lol

On November 20, 2007 at 4:56 pm

That is just to fix some of the stuttering problems, doesn’t fix the crash unfortunately. Sorry! :( I’m still waiting for some kind of fix for the stupif crash myself. Play fine for a few minutes, then boom it craps out. But, less graphics stuttering now at least.

On November 21, 2007 at 8:17 am

wth……… just bought the game…. waited for this for years…. AND THIS IS WHAT I GOT….. i didnt even see a monster….. the game crashed and it has the “ERROR REPoRT” thingy…….. wth is WRONG????

MS is a in money ripper…..

On November 21, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Had that problem too 20 seconds into it. It’s no problem if (for some reason) you start it right from the games folder (instead of off a table top icon or disk startup). Don’t know why that fixed it but it did.

But now deep into the game I’m having the same stuttering and stalling crap problems everyone else is. Why the hell don’t these people test what they release?

On November 22, 2007 at 11:59 am

This problem is not bloody smal and sure as the pope is a catholic it aint fixable as yet.

This solution does not work.

PC is hotter than Caprice

On November 25, 2007 at 8:55 pm

I’ve been getting the same problem with this game. I’ve waited a long time as well(and whoever said they’ve waited years, GoW has only been out for little over A year). Crashing every five minutes or so. I got really lucky once and it didn’t crash for about 20 minutes, thought I had cured it, but all was for not. Some one said that they were having a problem with their video card? It was an X1950 PRO I believe, to whoever said that, that is your video card overheating, not crashing. Clean the heatsink. I would like a fix if someone can find it, I’ve been looking for one as well. Xefon, your link has no files in it, I would very much appreciate it if you fixed that so I could test your fix. Waiting for a patch/user fix at the moment. ing Epic.

On November 26, 2007 at 12:10 am

For anyone still checking and still has the stutter problem, this thread from guru3d should help, it stopped the stuttering for me but the game still crashes:

On November 26, 2007 at 1:21 am

I would repost, but I based the info off of a crack. So I dont really know the legalities. And For 90% of people it doesnt work. I have fixed 5 so far though. Try this This is the just of the trick I used, I just tweaked it. Get the razor911 NoDVD Crack and and open up the file and Paste Here “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\WarGame-G4WLive.exe” It fixed all my probems, but I did windows update, the live update, new forceware, and open the ports on my router. I am just pissed because I got the Ware from Razor and its in spanish, and It sound like crap. Even though I can now play it, I want it in english. So and english patch anyone. I am going to buy it now I know it will play but it will be friday. I test games befor I buy them. Best luck to all. And I don’t know about you guys but I am a pc guy, but I did have this for the 360 and had every achievement. I love this game. I thought I would be much better wasd’ing the game, but to tell you the truth I think this game was easier on a controler. Just me.

On November 27, 2007 at 1:17 pm

Still bloody waiting on this getting fixed…wtf is going on!!!!

I bought this game 3 weeks ago..cant take it back to shop cos i opened box to try game.

It doesnt work with vista 32 ultimate.
880gtx video card and core duo 6800

when will microsoft fix this….this is against the trade descriptions act surely.?

On November 27, 2007 at 3:35 pm

Again, if your having issues, try editing the code, explanied here, you need to scroll through a bit, but it eliminated the stuttering, and it has not crashed yet. It seems to work for nvidia as well as ati.

On November 29, 2007 at 11:38 am

This year christmas will have lot’s of cool games available.. Crysis, God of War and… Universe at War!
In my opinion Universe at War is this year’s best release! Have you seen the trailer?
Amazing isn’t it?! I can’t wait to buy it :D

On November 29, 2007 at 7:49 pm

For those who are still having problems, there is now a patch at the official gears of war website, manual download, you do not need live.

On December 1, 2007 at 9:18 am

Still doesnt work with the GOW patch…still crashes after 10 secs of so.

On December 12, 2007 at 11:26 am

:???: ive had this game from almost day one and i havnt had a decent play of it yet. i think the second live update may have stopped my game crashing but i havnt played long enough but have played online fine..ish. the crap problem is the stuttering like every few secs(notlag or poor pc) i have same specs as the guy with the first post. even on low setting it stutters. problems, 360 version miles better. yeah and i can also play cod 4 on high

It doesn’t matter how good of a computer you have(as stated by someone earlier) I have one of the fastest machines on the market. One of the biggest things I’ve noticed & people w/SLI also agree(I run cross-fire w/VERY high end cards $750 total in just video cards) You have to turn off SLI or crossfire & it will reduce the stutter substantually. This is a fact. Also Kane & lynch uses microsoft live or whatever it’s called..just like gears of war & I have to turn off crossfire for it or it is EXTREMELY slow & stutters as well. I’m still able to max everything out on both games, but the point is I have 2 cards for a reason! Running: Asus p5k deluxe w/core2duo 6850 @ 5.0ghz & 1333FSB w/4gigs of crucial ballistix tracer RAM @ 1100mhz. Zalman cooling system, xfinity ultra power supply 2x 2900xt video cards. WD 500gig sata HDD w/16mb cache @ 7200rpm & seagate 320gig sata HDD w/16mb cache. 2x samsung lightscribe, dvd RAM & everything else burners. 1 sony 20x dvd player. 1 sony floppy drive & 1 iomega zip drive And a very customized case. So like I said it’s not your computer, it’s the game & crossfire or sli being engaged. Good luck.

all you have to do to fix the 15 second crash is open the game through the startup icon located somwhere in program files/gears of war

On January 9, 2008 at 9:09 pm

I found that if I disabled PDVDServ.exe in the task manager, everything works fine.
Hope that helps someone, as it took me two days of installing, uninstalling, searching, trying different combos of applications, mb drivers, video drivers, etc before I figured it out.
Happy Hunting!!!

I’ve found that V-Sync screws up my game real bad along with some of the high texture settings. But other than that I’ve been playing it 1680 x 1050 on high/medium settings. I’ve beat the game twice now. Once on casual once on hardcore. The Brumak is pretty bad ass looking, but he’s not too hard to kill. Now on to insane mode…
Good luck guys, hope you all gets to ze gamings soon.

Wtf guys? i mean come on. I had no problems at all except at the beginning for a while before i formated my computer for another reason. I had to click GOW like 3 times but not a god damn problem is with mine. I don’t have a new system and i could run the thing on high!! Here is some solutions maybe everyone know but i will say it anyways

1. Make sure u don’t have 500 processors running in the background (max: 30)
2. Make sure its a legal copy of the game
3. If u have a system that came out 5 years ago. GET A NEW ONE
5. Vista is not a good software to be running game but some people might make it work
6. Make sure that there is no: Viruses, Trojan, Spyware, etc. (Some of the anti- software like AVG might not pick up all the viruses. Also, Avg i had just deleted the files even if it was a critical one. So, when u had XP for a year or so and had a few viruses. Good idea to reformat your computer because there could be hidden viruses or missing files.)
8. Some hardware may not be compatible with some of the newer software.
9. If u could play crysis demo… that is not a achievement. If u played Crysis at high level of graphics and beat it then good for u.
10. Some software could also interfere with the game too. MAKE SURE AGAIN TOO TAKE ANY SOFTWARE THAT IS NOT NEEDED. EX: AIM (WTF Y ARE U TEXTING DURING GOW)
11. There could be a 11
12. SOME updates too could interfere with ur software/hardware.
13. Make sure u leave the game to install the updates. And check back for more.
14. DO I have nothing else better to do then type this???

Hey guys, I’m running the game at 1440 by 900 resolution with all the video options maxed and if I reduce the resolution or change anything at all it doesn’t change a damn thing about the stuttering issue. I have 4gb of ram in a dual core processor with a 8800GTX nvidia graphics card. I’ve tried going all the way down to 800 by 600 resolution and it doesn’t make a damn difference at all. It is definitely a software issues that will hopefully get fixed with a patch someday. Don’t hold your breath.
P.S. I’m using Windows XP, though I bought the Vista upgrade it can’t play my games for —-!

heya people i had a problem like the rest of you

i have read there is a patch out i dont know if it works but it seems microsoft have accepted it at last YAY so am buying it tomorrow and hopefully it works YAY and if that cr33per says owt bout my rig hes fuked it i made it on money i have well all do your best…

On April 5, 2008 at 1:14 pm

I got rid of the stuttering by playing around in the config file.I replaced this.

you must copy the code above in the folowing files:

in My Documents/My games/Gears OF War/War game/Config:

1) DefaultEngineUserSettings.ini

and in the game directory: in Gears of war /Engine/Config:

Have fun guys!!!

When I bought this in December (and up till now) I havn’t had any problems what so ever, except if I had textures or PP (idr which one it was) on Ultra every like 30sc it would stutter idk if that is what u guys r talking about, to fix this I OCed my video card. But I havn’t ad any crashes tho

E6750 ~3.4Ghz
2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer
EVGA 8800GT ~740/1826/2000
Windows Vista x86

Also you guys whining about Vista, I have only had 1 problem with it and that was with my surround sound and I fixed that the day I noticed it. Otherwise it hasn’t been slow on me or anything, it was when I had my 6200 lol but go figure :P
