Get Some RTS History: Play Dune II In Your Browser

If you’re a fan of the Command & Conquer series, StarCraft and Warcraft, and you haven’t got anything better to do with your day off, might I suggest you play a little free Dune II?

A predecessor and direct inspiration for a number of well-loved RTS titles to come after it, Dune II: Building a Dynasty is based on Frank Herbert’s series of novels and takes players to Arrakis, the contested planet that is the only known place in the universe where the all-important spice Melange is produced.

You can take on the role of one of three factions — House Atreides, House Harkonnen or House Ordos — and use the profitable spice to finance your defensive and offensive efforts, like building bases and fighting off enemy houses. Also worth noting: As you build bases and expand across Arrakis, you’ll have to deal with sand worms and other things that make the planet inhospitable.

Dune II brought a lot of great RTS elements into the general lexicon, like base-building and faction-specific weaponry; it’s basically the game that started what we commonly know as the real-time strategy genre. If you’ve got a little time off, you should check it out right here.
