Get To Know Every Big Release in 2012
To Be Announced 2012
On: PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3
A new entry into the BioShock franchise takes players to the 1914 flying city of Columbia, with a whole new political angle and new Plasmid-like abilities for this first-person shooter. BioShock: Infinite promises to be one of the most anticipated titles of the year, with its new setting and even some time-travely gameplay mechanics thrown in.
Blizzard is (finally) bringing the third installment of its dungeon crawling role-playing title to bear for PC players. With new character classes, new abilities and tons of customization, Diablo III is going to be both an enormous time-sink and one of the biggest games of 2012.
World of WarCraft: Mists of Pandaria
We’re not exactly sure that the next expansion of Blizzard’s uber-popular MMO will be hitting in 2012, but given how much of it seemed to be done when it was announced at BlizzCon 2011 in November, it seems like adventurers could be exploring the lost island of Pandaria before 2012 is out.
StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
The second installment of the three parts of StarCraft II is due sometime in 2012 as well. Players will get to take on the role of Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades, and lead the zerg swarms into another round of brutal battles.
Ghost Recon Online
Ubisoft plans to bring to a free-to-play Ghost Recon game to the PC, rather than port Ghost Recon: Future Soldier from consoles (supposedly to combat “piracy”). So there will be a third-person shooter in the vein of the Tom Clancy franchise to provide you with multiplayer action sometime in 2012 — we just don’t know when, or if you’ll want to play it.
The jetpack infused FPS series returns as a free-to-play online multiplayer title. Currently, Tribes: Ascend is in beta, but that suggests we’ll be zipping around the skies and exploding enemies for real by the end of the year.
An MMOFPS that re-imagines the PlanetSide of 2003 slightly, bringing it into the modern era almost a decade later and taking place during the same period and in the same setting. It’ll also be free-to-play, but the details of how any payment system will work haven’t been revealed yet.
Game of Thrones
The action-RPG based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels (and the HBO series based on them) puts you in the dark fantasy world of the books, with all the intrigue that comes with it. You’ll play as a hedge knight and a member of the Night’s Watch, working through a story that goes parallel to that of the novels.
Thinking of a game we forgot? We’re not hating, there are just a lot of them, and 2012 is going to be a big year. Leave the games you’re excited to see in the comments.
We’re adding a few big games mentioned by commenters here. Keep giving us your suggestions! – Editor
