GF Podcast 37: Tomb Raider Exclusivity, P.T., Micro Transactions
It’s been a bit crazy this week on the GameFront Podcast, what with Gamescom 2014 in full swing and some interesting news lighting up the Internet.
First up is the discussion of Square Enix’s outwardly bonkers plan to give Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusively to Xbox — although, we also learned this week that the exclusive won’t last forever (naturally). Still, what’s Square thinking, giving up a huge chunk of its audience? We discuss the business ins and outs of the decision (spoiler: Square Enix is afraid to lose money on the game after Tomb Raider 2013 came in under expectations).
Also on our docket is P.T., the horror “playable teaser” that hit the Playstation Network during Gamescom and wound up being an advertisement for Silent Hills, an upcoming entry in the franchise that’s being helmed by Metal Gear’s Hideo Kojima and brings in the collaboration of film director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim). Some of us really like the teaser and the ideas behind it; some of us do not (*ahem*MeIdon’tlikeit*cough*)
We also take a look at announcements micro-transactions — how Assassin’s Creed: Unity will include them, and how Rollercoaster Tycoon World will not, and seems very proud of that fact.
The illustrious James Heaney isn’t joining us this week on the cast because he’s busy being the one-man ground team at SOE Live 2014. Keep up with all his great coverage right here.
Hit us up with your questions, comments and hate mail (I’ll fight any of you on P.T.! [Not really, it's really not that big of a deal]) by sending your emails to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Don’t forget to check out Mitchell and James’ weekly GameFront Twitch Streams, noon to 2 p.m. PDT on Wednesdays, at twitch.tv/gamefront!
